Shortleaf Pine Planting at LBL

Land Between the Lakes - LBLOffice of Land Between the Lakes, KY/TN – Land Between The Lakes has planted approximately 29,000 Shortleaf pine seedlings on 42 acres near Demumbers Bay.

Hardwood trees and Loblolly pines in this area sustained heavy damage during the 2009 ice storm and other wind events. Non-native Loblolly pines were removed from the area and replaced with native Shortleaf pines.

TWRA announces New Long-Term Funding for Federal Trout Hatchery Operation, Stocking Program

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRAErwin, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR) joined U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander and leaders from the Tennessee Valley Authority in an announcement to provide long-term funding for trout production and stocking in 13 TVA dam tailwaters and reservoirs in Tennessee and Georgia.

The announcement for the multi-agency agreement to the USFWS came in a press conference at the Erwin National Fish Hatchery on Monday (May 11th). The agreement ensures popular trout stocking programs in the region will continue beyond 2016, when a temporary TVA funding agreement reached in 2013 is set to expire. [Read more]

Simple Steps to Save Power During Cold Snap

Tennessee Valley AuthorityKnoxville, TN – Mother Nature appears ready to remind the Tennessee Valley that it is still winter this week as multiple masses of cold air are forecast to blanket the area from Tuesday night through Friday.

With the drop in temperatures comes an increase in power use and, ultimately, utility bills, but consumers can limit those increases by taking a few simple steps.

“Small changes can make a big difference, such as lowering your home thermostat from 68 to 67 degrees,” said Jacinda Woodward, senior vice president of Transmission and Power Supply for the Tennessee Valley Authority. “One degree of temperature really won’t affect the comfort of your home, but that small reduction can mean a savings of 3 percent on your power bill.” [Read more]

TWRA reports State of Tennessee extends Public Caves Closure into Fourth Year to Protect Bats in Southeast

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – Caves located on state lands in Tennessee will remain closed in an effort to slow the spread of White Nose Syndrome (WNS) among the state’s bat population.

During the upcoming year, state and federal agencies and non-governmental organizations will consult with recreational caving organizations to determine how to best manage the spread of this disease while maintaining high quality recreation. Biologists will also continue to work with researchers to better understand WNS and determine the best ways to mitigate the effects of WNS on Tennessee’s bats. [Read more]

Lack of Rain Keeps Some TVA Reservoir Levels Below Normal

Tennessee Valley AuthorityKnoxville, TN – Despite recent rainfall, several reservoirs managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority are experiencing lower water levels due to below normal rain and runoff this spring and may not reach targeted summer recreation levels by June 1st.

TVA is working to provide the highest possible water levels to support popular recreation activities including boating, fishing and swimming all across the Tennessee Valley. [Read more]

The Seal of the State of TennesseeNashville, TN – Tennessee Deputy Governor Claude Ramsey, Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner Bob Martineau and General Services Commissioner Steven G. Cates today announced a series of energy efficiency projects in state government, as well as the new Clean Tennessee Energy Grant Program.

The state projects, as well projects for other public and private entities that will be funded through the grant program, are designed to both increase cost savings and decrease emissions.

“Increasing energy efficiency in state government will help us be even better stewards of both taxpayer dollars and our environment,” Haslam said. “These projects will benefit Tennesseans on both fronts, and I look forward to implementing additional projects as we move forward.” [Read more]

This thoughtful donation will have a positive impact on thousands, possibly millions, of future visitors to Land Between The Lakes (LBL).

James T. Ramey, who was born in Eddyville, KY, was an attorney and nuclear expert who served as counsel for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission’s Chicago office. Shortly after being appointed as a commissioner with the Atomic Energy Commission by President John F. Kennedy, Mr. Ramey played a key role in the critical negotiations that averted nuclear war during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.” [Read more]

State of Tennessee extends Public Caves Closure into third year to protect Bats in Southeast

During the upcoming year, state and Federal agencies and non-governmental organizations will consult with recreational caving organizations to determine how to best manage the spread of this disease while maintaining high quality recreation.

State land holding agencies including Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture initially agreed to close all caves on public property beginning July 1st, 2009. The Nature Conservancy has also agreed to follow the state’s lead to extend the closure on all caves located on Conservancy property. [Read more]
