National Ranking Highlights Tennessee’s Advancement in Serving Mental Health Needs of Citizens

Nashville, TN – Tennessee moved up eleven spots to a ranking of 28th in responding to the mental health needs of its citizens according to the 2021 State of Mental Health in America report published by Mental Health America.
The annual ranking of all 50 states and the District of Columbia examines data trends in various categories relating to prevalence of mental illness, substance use disorder, thoughts of suicide, and access to care for both adults and youth.

Tennessee Department of Health Joins New CDC Suicide Prevention Program

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health today announced receipt of a $750,000 funding award for suicide prevention efforts over the next five years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Program includes a focus on vulnerable populations at increased risk for suicide.

Tennessee Department of Health Finds Some Overdose Deaths Associated With Buprenorphine

Nashville, TN – Buprenorphine is an important part of treatment for many with substance use disorder, and coupled with therapy and support it can save lives. However, Tennessee Department of Health data show an increase in deaths associated with buprenorphine when the drug is used with another respiratory depressant.
As organizations and individuals across Tennessee work to reduce the impact of the epidemic of drug overdoses in our state, TDH is raising awareness of risks associated with buprenorphine when combined with other drugs.
Tennessee Department of Health reports Increasing Number of Tennesseans Dying from Drug Overdoses

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Department of Health data show 1,631 Tennesseans died from drug overdoses in 2016, the highest annual number of such deaths recorded in state history. This is an increase from the 1,451 overdose deaths recorded among Tennessee residents in 2015.
“Each of these numbers represents a person, with family and friends who are now facing the loss of someone dear to them to a cause that is preventable,” said TDH Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH.

Nashville, TN – Fentanyl: It’s here; it’s deadly and not just illegal users are at risk. Along with fentanyl there are other, more powerful drugs like carfentanil that are being used in counterfeiting legal drugs like Percocet and even counterfeiting of illegal heroin.
That’s the message leaders from the Tennessee Department of Health, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security provided today during a press conference at TBI headquarters in Nashville.
