Tennessee Department of Human Services begins In Person Services by Appointment Only, Monday

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) is taking immediate steps to ensure access to critical services and benefits for customers while protecting the health of employees and the public in response to coronavirus (COVID-19).
After a careful analysis of foot traffic and the health and safety guidelines for coronavirus (COVID-19 provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Tennessee Department of Health, the TDHS has decided to move to appointment only for in person services beginning Monday, March 23rd, 2020.

Tennessee Department of Human Services Online and telephone services remain available to all Tennesseans.

This includes new resources that were made available online today for those with a financial need who were impacted by the March 3rd tornado disaster.
Tennessee Cooking Up a Healthier Summer for Rural Children

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) is seeking rural communities as it opens the application process for organizations to participate in this year’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).
The goal of the SFSP is to ensure that children 18 and younger who benefit from meal programs during the school year continue to have that same access to nutritious meals during the summer.

Tennessee Department of Human Services is focusing on recruiting rural partners to help feed children with the Summer Food Service Program.
Tennessee Tipping the Scales Against Childhood Obesity

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) is receiving recognition for new requirements designed to promote good health in state licensed child care agencies.
The National Resource Center (NRC) for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education cited those changes in a report https://nrckids.org/files/Final.ASHW.2018.Report_8.19.19.pdf ranking Tennessee’s regulations as the most supportive of obesity prevention in the country. This is the first time Tennessee has topped the NRC’s annual report and it marks a substantial improvement from the state’s previous 39th ranking.

A new report ranks the state number one in the nation for child care licensing regulations that support healthy weight practices.

Tennessee Read to be Ready Summer Grant Programs Show Significant Gains in Student Learning

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Department of Education Commissioner Candice McQueen has announced the results from the third year of the Read to be Ready Summer Grant Program, which provides funding to educators to lead tuition-free, literacy-focused summer camps for students in need across the state.
For the third year in a row, rising first, second, and third grade students who participated in the program showed gains in their reading comprehension and accuracy skills and increased their motivation to read.

Tennessee Emergency Management Agency releases Severe Weather update

Nashville, TN – A powerful storm front moved across Tennessee on Saturday, February 24th, 2018, and produced localized flooding, lightning impacts, and unconfirmed reports of tornado touchdowns. Several Tennessee counties have rescued individuals from damaged structures and transported those with injuries.
The State Emergency Operations Center in Nashville is activated at a Level 4 – Elevated status and staffed with Emergency Service Coordinators from many State of Tennessee departments with personnel providing direct assistance to the impacted counties.

Tennessee Department of Education releases Read to be Ready results

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Department of Education Commissioner Candice McQueen announced the results from the second year of the Read to be Ready Summer Grant Program, which provides funding to educators to lead tuition-free, literacy-focused summer camps for students in need across the state. In 2017, about 8,000 rising first, second, and third grade students—7,500 more students than last summer—gained critical reading skills and increased in their motivation to read.
