Dallas, TX – Parents and policy advocates should take a “zero tolerance” approach to exposing children to secondhand cigarette smoke, which can be responsible for lifelong cardiovascular consequences in addition to respiratory and other health issues, according to a new scientific statement published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation.

A minute of Secondhand Marijuana Smoke may Damage Blood Vessels

Dallas, TX – Rats’ blood vessels took at least three times longer to recover function after only a minute of breathing secondhand marijuana smoke, compared to recovery after a minute of breathing secondhand tobacco smoke, according to new research in Journal of the American Heart Association, the Open Access Journal of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
When rats inhaled secondhand marijuana smoke for one minute, their arteries carried blood less efficiently for at least 90 minutes, whereas similar exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke caused blood vessel impairment that recovered within 30 minutes.
With many states legalizing medical and recreational marijuana, and possible corporate expansion within the cannabis industry, this type of research is important to help understand the health consequences of exposure to secondhand marijuana smoke, researchers said. (American Heart Association)

Microcephaly One of Many Defects that Deserve Attention
Nashville, TN – Until a recent outbreak of Zika virus disease was associated with babies born with microcephaly, many had not heard of the birth defect. Tennessee Department of Health data show approximately 45 to 50 cases occur in Tennessee each year.
Babies with microcephaly are born with heads that are smaller than expected. This can be associated with developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, problems with hearing or vision and seizures.

Six Months after initial advisory Tennessee Department of Health maintains position on E-Cigarettes; Use At Own Risk

Nashville, TN – Six months after issuing a public health advisory on the use of electronic cigarettes, the Tennessee Department of Health advisory remains in effect.
Additionally, the department has petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for regulation of electronic cigarettes and similar electronic devices that produce emissions or “vapor” that contain, despite the perceptions of many, much more than just water vapor.
