APSU Governors Bass TournamentBuchanan, TN – The 21st annual Austin Peay State University Governors Bass Tournament was held in the rain Saturday, May 16th on Kentucky Lake. Boats launched from Paris Landing State Park at 6:00am. There were 212 boats registered for the event and 200 competed for the $12,000 in prize money.

The weather was clear some but mainly held to a steady rain for most of the day with periods of light drizzle. Despite the conditions, the fishermen were in high spirits at the start of the event.

Hears Restructured Remediation Success Story

Tennessee Board of RegentsCookeville, TN – Tennessee Board of Regents colleges are improving success rates for students who come to campus requiring remedial support.

Members of the Tennessee Board of Regents received the news during a report on academic initiatives at the Board’s quarterly meeting on the campus of Tennessee Tech University today.

A pilot program involving almost 1,000 students that began at nine community colleges last year helped the colleges improve students’ successful pass rate of the required freshman math course from about 10 percent to 62 percent overall, and in freshman writing from 30 percent to 74 percent. Tennessee National Guard looks at Winter Storm Damage Response

Tennessee National GuardNashville, TN – Late on Presidents Day 2015, 19 members of the Tennessee Army National Guard’s 194th Engineer Brigade, equipped with High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV’s), were called out to perform health and wellness checks on motorists in response to rapidly deteriorating road conditions on two major interstates.

That was two weeks ago, and today, Tennessee Army and Air Guard personnel are still at work aiding state and local responders in efforts to recover from a severe winter storm that swept across the state in two waves.

Tennessee Governor, Commissioners announce Strategic Plan To Tackle Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic

State of TennesseeNashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam joined Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) Commissioner E. Douglas Varney and others today to announce “Prescription for Success,” the state’s plan to prevent and treat prescription drug abuse in Tennessee.

Prescription drug abuse is a pervasive, multi-dimensional issue impacting Tennessee individuals, families, and communities. Of the 4,850,000 adults in Tennessee, it is estimated that nearly 5 percent (about 221,000) have used pain relievers, also known as prescription opioids, in the past year for non-medical purposes. Of those, it is estimated that 69,100 are addicted to prescription opioids and require treatment for prescription opioid abuse.

TWRA announces 2013-14 Winter Trout Stocking Schedule

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has announced its 2013-14. TWRA plans to release approximately 90,000 rainbow trout into Tennessee waters from December through March.

Program to Educate Teens on Importance of Buckling Up

Tennessee Department of TransportationNashville, TN – Each year, dozens of Tennessee teens die in traffic crashes and many of those are not wearing safety belts. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers.

The Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO) wants to help save lives by encouraging more teens to wear their safety belts. The GHSO is partnering with State Farm Insurance, Jackson Area Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (JACOA) and four Tennessee high schools to sponsor a program called Click It AND Ticket.

Cordell Hull and Sgt. Alvin C. York Host Junior Ranger Camp on Friday, June 24th

Tennessee State ParksNashville, TN – Calling all Junior Rangers! We wanted to alert you about a unique summer day camp. On Friday, June 24th, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, Cordell Hull Birthplace and Sgt. Alvin C. York State Parks will co-host a World War I day camp for children ages six to 14. The camp will be held at Cordell Hull Birthplace. There is no charge for the event and parents are encouraged to join in the fun.

Designed to engage young students on the history of the first world war, activities will include trench art – an opportunity to make your own helmets and dog tags. There will be original artifacts from the Great War, along with a WWI children’s booklet and the old-fashioned game “Over the Top.” [Read more]

Chattanooga Girl Wins Best of Show for 2011 Tennessee Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – Joanna Rush, of Chattanooga is the Best of Show winner in the 2011 Tennessee Federal Junior Duck Stamp art contest. She was recognized as this year’s winner at an awards’ ceremony held at Bass Pro Shops.

Joanna, who recently turned 15, is a sophomore home school student. She titled her winning artwork “Let’s Get Together,” depicting a male and female cinnamon teal in acrylic, colored pencil, and water color.
