TWRA Executive Director Ed Carter to retire in May

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) executive director Ed Carter has announced that he will retire effective May 31st, 2020. He made the announcement during the February meeting of the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting on Friday.
Director Carter assumed his current role in 2009. He began his career in 1972 and has held positions in the divisions of Law Enforcement, Information and Education, and as TWRA Region II assistant manager. He became TWRA’s first Chief of the Boating Division when the division was formed in 1990.

Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission holds First 2020 Meeting

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission held its first meeting of 2020 which included updates on chronic wasting disease (CWD), a preview of next year’s waterfowl and migratory hunting seasons, and Asian carp. The two-day meeting was held in the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s Region II Ray Bell Building.
Chuck Yoest, TWRA’s CWD coordinator, reported that the number of CWD-positive and high-risk counties in southwest Tennessee has increased to seven and four, respectively.

TWRA announces Deer Carcass Incinerator to be constructed in Fayette County

Nashville, TN – An incinerator to address deer carcass disposal in Unit CWD will be constructed in Fayette County. The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission (TFWC) approved a $1 million budget expansion for the project at its December meeting. The incinerator will be constructed at the Fayette County Landfill and will be maintained and operated by Fayette County.
“CWD poses many challenges including safe disposal of deer carcasses,” said Dr. Hank Wright, commissioner of TFWC District 9.
TWRA will build an incenerator in Fayette County to safely disposal of CWD infected deer carcasses.
TFWC October Meeting gives CWD, Turkey Study updates

Hardeman County, TN – Updates on chronic wasting disease (CWD) and an ongoing turkey research project were given at the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission one-day October meeting held at Lone Oaks Farm, which is administered by UT Extension, a unit of the University of Tennessee Institute Of Agriculture.
Chuck Yoest, CWD Coordinator, provided an update beginning with a reminder of Crockett County and Gibson County now being classified as CWD high-risk counties.

TFWC to update Fishing Regulations at Commission’s September Meeting

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission (TFWC) will be updating fishing regulations at its September meeting. The meeting is scheduled September 19th-20th, 2019 in the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s Region II Ray Bell Building in Nashville.
Committee meetings start at 1:00pm on Thursday. The regular TFWC meeting begins at 9:00am on Friday.
The TWRA Fisheries Division presented its proposed changes to regulations at the TFWC’s August meeting.

TWRA reports Deer Season for Private Lands, Special Unit CWD Deer Hunt set for August 23rd-25th

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) Tennessee’s statewide three-day archery private lands only/antlered only deer season will be held August 23rd-25th, 2019. In addition, newly-created muzzleloader/archery, antlered only hunt for the new Unit CWD for private lands and selected public lands will take place.
Unit CWD hunting regulations only apply to CWD positive counties of Fayette County, Hardeman County, and Madison County and CWD high-risk counties of Chester County, Haywood County, McNairy County, Shelby County, and Tipton County.
Three-day archery private lands only/antlered only deer season will be held August 23rd-25th, 2019.
Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission makes adjustments to Duck Blind Drawings

Cookeville, TN – At the June meeting of the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission adjustments were made for the August handheld duck bling drawings and an update on a fisheries research cooperative effort was given among the agenda items.
At the TFWC’s May meeting, the commission requested Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency staff review the handheld duck blind drawing process for consistency and ways to reduce the likelihood of buying/selling of blind sites.

Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission creates CWD Hunting Unit, Implements Science Base Regulations for Disease Management

Nashville, TN – Changes to deer hunting regulation has been made by the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission (TFWC) in continued response to chronic wasting disease (CWD) which was found in three southwestern Tennessee counties last winter.
The commission approved the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s recommendation to establish a new CWD deer hunting unit for the counties in which we have found CWD-positive deer (Fayette County, Hardeman County, and Madison County) and counties within 10 miles of a positive CWD deer location (Chester County, Haywood County, McNairy County, Shelby County and Tipton County).

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission (TFWC) has made regulatory changes in response to the confirmation of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer in Fayette and Hardeman counties. The changes came at a special called meeting of the TFWC on Thursday (December 20th) at the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency headquarters.
The commission voted to establish a CWD management zone which currently includes Fayette, Hardeman, and McNairy counties. The commission took action to create deer carcass exportation restrictions and a restriction on feeding wildlife within the high risk area of the CWD management zone, exceptions apply.

Hardeman County, TN – The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission received an update on Asian carp among its agenda items at the final meeting of the calendar year which concluded Friday.
The TFWC met for the first time at Lone Oaks Farm in Hardeman County near Bolivar and Middleton, which is operated by the University of Tennessee.
