Tennessee Governor Bill Lee’s first budget to include Tax Cuts
Nashville, TN – Today, Tuesday, February 19th, 2019, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced his plans to repeal the amusement tax on gym memberships in his upcoming budget.
“I’m pleased to be able to include a tax cut in my first budget,” said Lee. “Repealing the gym tax is an important step in reducing the burdens on small businesses in our state.”

Dallas, TX – In 2014, Berkeley, California paved the way in our nation once again with policies that support healthy living. Berkeley was the first city in our nation to implement a tax on sugary drinks at the minimum level recommended by the American Heart Association of one penny per ounce to raise revenue for improving community health and nutrition.
Researchers have assessed the initial impact of the Berkeley tax in a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health.

The American Heart Association comments on first-year evaluation of implementation of Mexico’s sugar-sweetened beverage tax in 2014.
Dallas, TX – In 2014, Mexico implemented a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages as a step toward reversing the twin epidemics of diabetes and obesity.
A study examining the first-year impact on beverage volume sales in Mexico after tax implementation shows that a tax of one peso per liter decreased the volume of sugary drinks purchased by a significant amount (6% monthly average), while also increasing the volume of healthier drinks purchased (4% monthly average), specifically bottled water.

Governor holds ceremonial bill signing in Gibson County highlighting impact on family farms
Humboldt, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam today traveled to Luckey Family Farm in Humboldt to highlight the second of three tax cuts passed during this year’s legislative session and signed by the governor.
Haslam held a ceremonial bill signing of HB 3760/SB 3762, which phases out the state inheritance tax during the next three years before it is completely eliminated starting January 1st, 2016.
The bill was introduced by the governor as the state continues its work toward providing the best customer service at the lowest possible cost to Tennesseans. [Read more]

Dallas, TX – Men who drank a 12-ounce sugar-sweetened beverage a day had a 20 percent higher risk of heart disease compared to men who didn’t drink any sugar-sweetened drinks, according to research published in Circulation, an American Heart Association journal.
