U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report shows 137 Child Drownings in Pools and Spas during Summer 2012

Initial summer drowning figures are only part of the annual toll

U.S. Consumer Product Safety CommissionWashington, D.C. – According to information compiled from media reports and released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) Pool Safely campaign, 137 children younger than 15 years drowned in a pool or spa during the traditional summer season of Memorial Day to Labor Day this year.

An additional 168 children of that age required emergency response for near-fatal incidents in pools or spas during that period.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report West Nile virus cases on the rise

Centers for Disease Control and PreventionWashington, D.C. – As of September 11th, 2012, 48 states have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes. A total of 2,636 cases of West Nile virus disease in people, including 118 deaths, have been reported to CDC.

Of these, 1,405 (53%) were classified as neuroinvasive disease (such as meningitis or encephalitis) and 1,231 (47%) were classified as non-neuroinvasive disease.
