LBL Spring Squirrel Season starts May 9th

Office of Land Between the Lakes, KY/TN – Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area’s 2015 spring squirrel hunting season will open May 9th-June 14th, in Tennessee and May 16th-June 19th, in Kentucky.
Hunters must have a valid Kentucky or Tennessee state hunting license for the state in which they are hunting. Hunters age 16 and older must also have a Land Between The Lakes Hunter Use Permit. These are available online, 24/7 at www.landbetweenthelakes.us/reservations/ or North and South Welcome Stations, Golden Pond Visitor Center, and wherever Kentucky and Tennessee state hunting licenses are sold.

People Urged to Eliminate Standing Water, Take Precautions during Outdoor Activities
Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed one human case of West Nile Virus this week, the first human case confirmed in Tennessee in 2014.
The WNV case involves a resident of Shelby County who is now recovering.
Mosquito populations in Tennessee are at their peak May through October. There is no human vaccine for West Nile Virus; therefore, Tennesseans are urged to take preventive measures to avoid being bitten by infected mosquitoes.

One Madison County Resident Tests Positive
Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed the first case of chikungunya in Tennessee. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laboratory results show a resident of Madison County tested positive for the virus.
TDH is reminding Tennesseans of the importance of taking precautions to protect themselves from bites from mosquitoes that may spread this and other viruses such as West Nile and La Crosse.
Chikungunya is transmitted by daytime biting mosquitoes.

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health is investigating the first potential cases of chikungunya in the state. Multiple people from Tennessee recently traveled to the Caribbean, where the illness is now a widespread epidemic with over 100,000 suspected cases.
Some of the recent travelers from Tennessee now have symptoms of the illness.
Chikungunya is transmitted by daytime biting mosquitoes.

Tennessee Department of Health urges Tennesseans to protect themselves against Illnesses spread by Mosquito Bites

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health is urging people to protect themselves from viruses transmitted by mosquitoes. Last year Tennessee experienced 33 human cases of West Nile virus, including one in December.
“It is extraordinarily unusual to see a confirmed case of West Nile virus in December in this part of the country, and it does cause concern and a need for increased awareness,” said Abelardo Moncayo, Ph.D., with the TDH Division of Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness. “While four out of five people with West Nile won’t show symptoms, others will develop severe illness and may suffer death or permanent neurological damage.”

Tennessee Department of Health says prepare for Ticks in order to Prevent Illness

Nashville, TN – After a record-setting number of Rocky Mountain spotted fever cases in the state last year, almost 700, the Tennessee Department of Health is reminding residents and visitors to start thinking now about prevention of tick bites.
“If the warmer weather is motivating you to be outside working or playing, just remember ticks can be found out there too, in rural and urban areas alike, and they are always looking for a free ride and meal,” said Abelardo Moncayo, Ph.D., with the TDH Division of Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness. “Tick bites should never be taken lightly; they can carry many diseases, including potentially deadly Rocky Mountain spotted fever.”
