Tennessee Department of EducationNashville, TN—Today, Monday, September 27th, 2021. the Tennessee Department of Education, in collaboration with Tennessee PBS, has launched Starting with Sounds, a Reading 360 statewide awareness campaign to help Tennessee parents and students understand the importance of reading in an engaging and fun way.

In collaboration with Tennessee PBS, the state’s six PBS stations- WCTE, WETP, WKNO, WKOP, WLJT, WNPT, WTCI- covering east to west and north to south, the department created Starting with Sounds to highlight the importance of early literacy and how families and students can practice reading by watching and listening to national and local musicians, athletes, and champions of student success read their favorite books and sing songs to help build these critical skills.

Tennessee Unemployment Rates drop in almost every County

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce DevelopmentNashville, TN – Unemployment rates in nearly all of Tennessee’s counties decreased in August. This marks the second consecutive month the jobless situation has improved in 93 or more of the state’s 95 counties.

August unemployment rates were lower in 93 counties across the state. The rate in Williamson County remained unchanged from July at 2.6%. Unemployment increased in Maury County from 4.2% to 4.5% in a month-to-month comparison.

TWRA celebrates National Hunting and Fishing Day September 25th

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) will be celebrating 2021 National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHFD) on Saturday, September 25th. On this special day, the rich tradition of fishing, hunting, and target shooting will be observed recognizing the conservation efforts of sportsmen and women across the country.

The day also coincides with the start of the statewide fall archery season for deer and the fall archery season for turkey in selected counties.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee Invites Tennesseans to Pick New License Plate Design

Tennessee State GovernmentNashville, TN – On Monday, September 20th, 2021, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee invited Tennesseans to “Rate the Plates” and help choose the state’s next standard license plate by selecting their favorite design at tn.gov/ratetheplates. Per Tennessee statute, the plate is redesigned every eight years if funds are approved in the General Assembly’s annual budget.

[320left]“As Tennessee celebrates 225 years of statehood, it’s a perfect time to redesign our license plate and feature the Tri-Star that represents each of our state’s unique grand divisions,” said Gov. Lee. “We welcome all Tennesseans to cast their vote and play a role in choosing this piece of our state’s history.”

Voting began Monday and will conclude at 11:59pm CT on Monday, September 27th. The winning design will be announced later this fall and available to the public in January 2022.

Tennessee statute requires the display of “Tennessee,” “Volunteer State” and “TNvacation.com” on the plate, as well as county name and expiration year decal locations. Statute provides that Tennesseans may select an “In God We Trust” plate option.

The new license plate design will replace the current plate that launched in 2006 with modifications in 2011, 2016, and 2017.

AAA reports Tennessee Gas Price Average remains unchanged

AAANashville, TN – The Tennessee gas price average held steady over last week. The Tennessee Gas Price average remains $2.89 which is two cents more than one month ago and nearly 95 cents more than one year ago. 

“Hurricane Nicholas complicated and slowed the recovery from Ida, but the seasonal drop-off in demand helped mitigate price increases on the week,” said Megan Cooper, spokeswoman, AAA – The Auto Club Group.

Free Clay Shoot available to Youth

Tennessee Wildlife FederationNashville, TN – Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) invites youth in grades 4 through 12 to come out and try their hand at the shotgun shooting sports. The free Recruiting Days will be held on October 2nd and October 9th at 17 locations across the state and will introduce youth to teams in their area.

Gas Price Average in Tennessee Drops Two Cents

AAANashville, TN – The Tennessee gas price average declined slightly over last week, falling nearly two cents, on average. The Tennessee Gas Price average is now $2.89 which is nearly a penny more expensive than one month ago and 95 cents more than one year ago. 

“Timing is everything, and while supplies have tightened due to the slow recovery after Hurricane Ida, this is also the point when gas demand starts its seasonal decline,” said Megan Cooper, spokeswoman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “While there may be some price fluctuation, we expect most motorists to see stability at the pump.”
