Five Military Veteran Tennessee State Employees Honored for Exemplary Service
Nashville, TN -Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and First Lady Crissy Haslam joined Tennessee Department of Veterans Services Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder and Major General Terry “Max” Haston from the Tennessee Military Department to recognize five veteran state employees and more than 470,000 Tennessee veterans of all ages and eras.
The Governor’s Veterans Day event was held on the second floor of the State Capitol in downtown Nashville.

Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and Tennessee Department of Veterans affairs join forces to prevent Veteran Suicides
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Commissioner Douglas Varney and Tennessee Department Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder today announced the number of suicides by Veterans increased from 197 in 2012 to 214 in 2013.
September is National Suicide Prevention Month which is an initiative to raise awareness about the tragic trend and the resources available to offer support.

Private First Class Cecil Garris’ remains recovered in France
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder recognize the service and sacrifice of Private First Class Cecil E. Harris of Shelbyville.
Harris was serving with the 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division on January 2nd, 1945 when his platoon was holding a defensive position in Dambach, France near the German border during World War II.

Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parkers Crossroads
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder today announced the future site of the fifth state veterans cemetery will be in Parkers Crossroads.
The 132-acre Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parkers Crossroads will be located at 693 Wildersville Road and will serve more than 45,000 veterans and their families within 17 counties in west Tennessee. [Read more]

First Class Petty Officer James L. Horton receives recognition in Gallatin
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder presented several medals linked to First Class Petty Officer James L. Horton’s World War II service during a ceremony today.
The event was hosted by Morningside of Gallatin to honor Horton who waited 70 years to receive the medals and recognition for his service onboard the USS Denver in 1943 and 1944.

Streamlined Process Will Allow Veterans and Family Members to be Pre-Approved for Burial
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder announced an innovative new online pre-registration form which will allow veterans and their families to be pre-approved for burial in the state veterans cemeteries.
Traditionally, funeral directors contact the nearest state veterans cemetery when they receive a request to bury the remains of a veteran or dependent who previously expressed interest in burial at one of the four locations.

New law affects WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam War Veterans
Nashville, TN – The Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs, Many-Bears Grinder and the Tennessee Department of Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman will be presenting a high school diploma to Korean War Veteran, William Milton Duncan Wednesday, June 19th at 10:30am in the Senate Library in the State Capitol.
Mr. Duncan was drafted in 1951 and began serving in the United States Army during the Korean War. Due to his military service, Mr. Duncan left high school a few days before completing requirements for his diploma. [Read more]

Law Encourages Businesses to Hire Vets and Helps Vets Find Work
Nashville, TN – The Vow to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 amends and expands definitions of the veteran target groups for employers hiring veterans through the Work Opportunity Tax Credit program.
“The Vow to Hire Heroes Act provides tax incentives for employers to hire both short-term and long-term unemployed veterans and affords larger tax credits for hiring certain categories of veterans,” said Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner Karla Davis. “The extension of the veterans’ category of the Work Opportunity Tax Credit is a needed strategy to increase employment opportunities for veterans and to reduce the unsatisfactorily high unemployment rate of veterans.” [Read more]
