Jobs4TN Online brings self-service functions to job seekers and employers

The Seal of the State of TennesseeNashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Karla Davis today announced a new jobs database to help connect job seekers with Tennessee employers.

Jobs4TN Online is a virtual recruiter, automatically notifying job seekers when jobs they may qualify for are posted and notifying employers when candidates who fit their needs register.

The online database contains positions from job orders placed directly by Tennessee employers, from corporate Internet sites, and from major job search engines. Jobs4TN Online also identifies available green jobs. [Read more]

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce DevelopmentNashville, TN – The Vow to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 amends and expands definitions of the veteran target groups for employers hiring veterans through the Work Opportunity Tax Credit program.

“The Vow to Hire Heroes Act provides tax incentives for employers to hire both short-term and long-term unemployed veterans and affords larger tax credits for hiring certain categories of veterans,” said Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner Karla Davis. “The extension of the veterans’ category of the Work Opportunity Tax Credit is a needed strategy to increase employment opportunities for veterans and to reduce the unsatisfactorily high unemployment rate of veterans.” [Read more]

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce DevelopmentNashville, TN – Tennessee Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development Karla Davis announced today Tennessee’s unemployment rate for December fell to 8.7 percent, down from the November revised rate of 9.1.

The national unemployment rate for December 2011 was 8.5 percent, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from the November rate.

Rate Drops 0.2 Percentage Point From September

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce DevelopmentNashville, TN – Tennessee Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development Karla Davis announced today Tennessee’s unemployment rate for October fell to 9.6 percent, down from the September revised rate of 9.8. The national unemployment rate for October 2011 was 9.0 percent, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the September revised rate.

“The drop in the unemployment rate from September to October is attributable to an increase in employment and fewer people looking for jobs,” Commissioner Davis said. “Education and health services were two of the sectors fueling the monthly increase in employment.”

University of Tennessee Economist Bill Fox states Tennessee has done a better job than the nation in creating employment opportunities. “Over the year, Tennessee’s jobless rate is slightly higher than it was a year ago and is still above the U.S. rate, but the state’s rate of employment growth at 1.7 percent has outpaced the nation’s. Durable goods manufacturing such as transportation equipment, machinery and metals contribute toward that positive growth.”

Major Changes in Estimated Nonagricultural Employment

Month-to-month increases occurred in local government education services, up 7,500 jobs; educational and health services was up 4,100; and trade, transportation, and utilities increased by 2,600. From September to October, leisure and hospitality decreased by 2,000; mining, logging, and construction was down 1,000; and financial activities declined by 800 jobs.

Major Changes in Estimated Nonagricultural Employment

Year-over-year increases took place in local government education services services, up 11,500 jobs; educational and health services was up 7,000; and durable goods manufacturing increased by 4,800. Employment decreases took place in retail trade, which decreased by 6,800; information was down 1,100; and nonmetallic mineral products declined by 1,000.

The national unemployment rate for September 2011 was 9.1 percent, unchanged from the August revised rate.

“The unemployment rate rose slightly due to a small decline in employment,” Commissioner Davis said. “There were seasonal gains in employment in areas like education, along with losses in leisure and hospitality. The net result was little change in the state’s employment picture.” [Read more]

Gradual increase in state rate mirrors national trend

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce DevelopmentNashville, TN – Tennessee Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development Karla Davis announced today Tennessee’s unemployment rate for June was 9.8 percent, up slightly from the May revised rate of 9.7. The national unemployment rate for June 2011 was 9.2 percent, up from the May revised rate of 9.1 percent.

“The decline in employment combined with a slight expansion in the labor force explains the higher unemployment rate,” Commissioner Davis said. “This is the third month in a row in which the unemployment rate has slightly increased.” [Read more]
