Nashville, TN – With the first serious cold weather storm front of 2016 headed toward Tennessee tonight, the Tennessee Department of Health is reminding residents about the need for increased efforts to protect themselves, their families and their friends from winter weather-related harm.
“We all need to take these potentially deadly winter weather activities and storms seriously, and use warnings as an opportunity to prepare and think differently than our normal routine to prevent a tragedy,” said TDH Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH.

Dallas, TX – Lowering the body’s temperature of cardiac arrest patients with “non-shockable” heart rhythms increases survival rates and brain function, according to new research in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation.
Therapeutic hypothermia is a medical treatment that intentionally lowers the body’s temperature to protect the body following a period of insufficient blood flow due to such events as a cardiac arrest, blood clot or stroke.

11 Tennesseans tragically lost to hypothermia since start of 2015
Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health is urging Tennesseans to stay warm and protect themselves, friends and family members from deadly hypothermia as another round of severe cold weather impacts the state.
A preliminary review of January and February 2015 fatalities indicates more than one-third of 30 cold weather-related deaths in Tennessee have been attributed to hypothermia, caused when the body’s core temperature drops to unsafe levels.
Tennessee Department of Health says Hypothermia is a Significant Health Threat

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency are warning residents that alcohol and certain drugs increase the risk for hypothermia.
The condition occurs when the body’s core temperature drops to 95° or lower and its effects can be deadly.
A total of 13,419 hypothermia-related fatalities were recorded in the U.S. in the last decade. [Read more]

Bitter cold expected next week for Paris – Henry County

Nashville, TN – According to the National Weather Service (NWS), extreme cold temperatures are expected next week across Paris – Henry County as well as West Tennessee. Beginning Tuesday, January 6th, the high is expected to be around 41°F dropping to 20°F Tuesday night.
Wednesday, January 7th, it will be mostly clear with a high only around 21°F falling to a bitter 5°F Wednesday night. Temperatures rise some on Thursday, January 8th, to 25°F with a low of 18°F.

THP Reminds Motorists: Never Leave Children Unattended in a Vehicle

NASHVILLE – With above average temperatures this June, the ‘dog days of summer’ are certainly looming on the state of Tennessee. As the heat becomes a factor, the Tennessee Department of Safety would like to remind motorists to never leave children or pets in an unattended vehicle, which can be a dangerous and sometimes deadly offense.
“A child or a pet should never be left in an unattended vehicle under any circumstances – especially in the heat,” said Department of Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell. “Motorists should routinely make sure all occupants exit the vehicle whenever they leave a car. An illness or even worse, a death, due to such a senseless tragedy is absolutely preventable.” [Read more]
