FBI Nashville Resident Agency Warns of Scammers Spoofing FBI Phone Number in Social Security Scam

Federal Bureau of Investigation - FBINashville, TN – The FBI Nashville Resident Agency has seen a recent increase in phone calls that spoof the office’s phone number as part of a Social Security scam. The callers will often “spoof,” or fake, the FBI Nashville Resident Agency’s phone number, 615.232.7500, so the call appears to be coming from the FBI on the recipient’s caller ID.

In this scam, fraudulent callers inform the victim that their Social Security number has been suspended and there is a warrant out for their arrest.

Tennessee Division of Consumer AffairsNashville, TN – For scammers, the season of holiday giving is the season of taking, and Tennesseans’ hard-earned money again tops scammers’ wish lists. Unfortunately, Tennessee consumers are falling for scammers’ ploys when it comes to gift card swindles in increasing numbers.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC)’s Consumer Sentinel Network reports Tennesseans lost nearly $1 million – over $943,000 – through prepaid gift card scams in 2018, which is a 44 % increase compared to 2017 when scammers stole $653,709 from consumers.

Don’t be duped into providing personal information

Better Business Bureau - BBBNashville, TN – Consumers in Nashville and surrounding counties are receiving “reward announcements” in one of 3 ways: a direct phone call, a cell phone text, or in some cases they will receive a letter in the mail. In either approach, there is a reward number and a phone number to call in order to claim your $100.00 gift card reward from Wal-Mart, Target, or Home Depot.

If you did not enter a legitimate promotion or contest to win a gift card, this should be your first clue that something is amiss. When calling the phone number, the consumer is directed to the rewards department where a representative asks a series of seemingly innocuous questions intended to glean as much personal information as possible.
