National Campaign Taking Place October 19th-25th

Tennessee Department of TransportationNashville, TN – The Governor’s Highway Safety Office is teaming up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration October 19th- 25th to spread awareness about teen driver safety.

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one killer of 14 -18 year olds in the United States. In 2013, 39,140 crashes in Tennessee involved a driver age 20 or younger. Those crashes accounted for over thirteen percent of total crashes throughout the state. While this is a decline from 2012, it is still more than one hundred crashes each day. [Read more]

370 Agencies to Receive $21.1 Million Total in Highway Safety Grants to Improve Safety on Tennessee Roadways

Tennessee Department of TransportationNashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Commissioner John Schroer and the Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO) Director Kendell Poole today announced $21.1 million in grants to Tennessee agencies to support highway traffic safety efforts.

The funds support the mission of the GHSO. The goal is to save lives and reduce injuries on Tennessee roadways through leadership, innovation, coordination and program support in partnership with numerous public and private organizations. [Read more]

Program to Educate Teens on Importance of Buckling Up

Tennessee Department of TransportationNashville, TN – Each year, dozens of Tennessee teens die in traffic crashes and many of those are not wearing safety belts. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers.

The Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO) wants to help save lives by encouraging more teens to wear their safety belts. The GHSO is partnering with State Farm Insurance, Jackson Area Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (JACOA) and four Tennessee high schools to sponsor a program called Click It AND Ticket.

Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security announces “No Refusal” Enforcement during Labor Day Weekend

Tennessee Highway Patrol, Governor’s Highway Safety Office and Mother’s Against Drunk Driving Make Joint Announcement

Tennessee Department of SafetyNashville, TN – Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons and Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Tracy Trott announced the department’s second “No Refusal” enforcement campaign at a joint press conference with the Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in Nashville.

The “No Refusal” enforcement effort, beginning at 6:00pm on Friday, August 31st and concluding at midnight on Monday, September 3rd, will also coincide with the Labor Day holiday weekend.
