Tennessee Labor Education Alignment Program (LEAP) Will Celebrate Workforce Development on TN LEAP Day

Nashville, TN – The Labor Education Alignment Program (LEAP) will showcase its successes at sites across Tennessee on TN LEAP Day, February 29th. Education and employer sites throughout the twelve LEAP site areas will demonstrate the skills students are learning through the program and provide students an opportunity to meet with employers.
TN LEAP Day, which will coincide with “Leap Day” on February 29th, will be host to twelve concurrent events at each of the LEAP programs across Tennessee.

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) has released the 2016 Annual Report for the Labor Education Alignment Education Program (LEAP), highlighting the early successes of LEAP in local communities in engaging education and employers to develop a pipeline of skilled workers in Tennessee. The report showcases LEAP as a model for alignment between industry and education.
LEAP is one of the primary initiatives of the Drive to 55, Governor Bill Haslam’s push to grow Tennessee’s postsecondary educational attainment rate to 55 percent by 2025.

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam today announced the next step in the Drive to 55: ensuring that colleges and universities are organized, supported and empowered in efforts to increase the number of Tennesseans with a postsecondary credential to 55 percent by 2025.
To enhance student success across higher education the plan includes key strategies to provide more focused support for community and technical colleges, increase autonomy and local control for Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) universities and strengthen the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC).

Legislation last step in two-year effort to cut state portion of sales tax on groceries to 5 percent
Vonore, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam today traveled to Monroe County to sign legislation to reduce the state portion of the sales tax on groceries from 5.25 percent to 5 percent.
Haslam held a ceremonial bill signing at Sloan’s Grocery in Vonore, Tennessee.
In 2012, the General Assembly passed and the governor signed the first step in reducing the state portion of the sales tax on groceries, lowering the rate from 5.5 percent to 5.25 percent. [Read more]

Whitwell, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam today traveled to Marion County to sign legislation to reduce the state portion of the sales tax on groceries from 5.5 percent to 5.25 percent.
Haslam held a ceremonial bill signing at the locally- and independently-owned Smith Bros. Grocery in Whitwell, Tennessee.

Bill aims to boost economic development in rural counties and for extraordinary projects
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam announced he has signed legislation to expand the state’s FastTrack program to specifically support economic development in rural communities and for exceptional projects.
The governor proposed the legislation, HB 2344/SB 2206, in January to create the FastTrack Economic Development Fund, an expansion of the Department of Economic and Community Development’s (ECD) current infrastructure and job training program. [Read more]

Nashville, TN – Joined by state employees, legislators and members of his Cabinet, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam today signed the Tennessee Excellence, Accountability and Management (TEAM) Act into law on the Tennessee Tower plaza across from the State Capitol in Nashville.
