Lamar Alexander, Doug Jones Introduce Bill to Simplify the FAFSA

U.S. SenateWashington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Doug Jones (D-Ala.) have introduced legislation to simplify the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that nearly 20 million families fill out every year to apply for federal student aid. 

“The 108-question FAFSA is one of the biggest challenges low-income students who want to go to college face,” Alexander, chairman of the Senate education committee, said. “Former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam told me that Tennessee has the highest rate of filling out the FAFSA, but it is still the single biggest impediment to more students enrolling in Tennessee Promise, our state’s free, two-year community college program.”

Tennessee State GovernmentNashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has proclaimed Thursday, January 12th, as the first “TN FAFSA Frenzy Day,” encouraging high school seniors and current college students to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by January 17th to maintain eligibility for key scholarship programs including Tennessee Promise.

Tennessee Promise is the state’s groundbreaking scholarship and mentoring program that provides high school graduates two years of community or technical college free of tuition and fees.

15,830 Students Utilizing Tennessee Promise Benefits This Fall

State of TennesseeNashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam today encouraged high school seniors to apply for the Tennessee Promise, Tennessee’s groundbreaking scholarship and mentorship program that provides high school graduates last-dollar scholarships to attend two years of community or technical college free of tuition and fees. The deadline for applications is November 2nd.

According to the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC), 15,830 students from the graduating high school class of 2015 are utilizing Tennessee Promise benefits this fall, which is the first year of implementation.
