Bison Auction to Take Place at Land Between the Lakes January 28th

Land Between the Lakes - LBLLand Between the Lakes, KY/TN – A public auction to reduce the size of bison herds in Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area will be held on Saturday, January 28th.

The sale will begin at 9:00am CST at the Elk & Bison Prairie corral. Bidder registration, final sale list, and viewing begin at 8:00am. Bison purchases may be made with cash, credit card, or personal check at time of bid acceptance.

The Elk & Bison Prairie corral is located on the east side of Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway, KY453, just north of US68/KY80.

Fee Free Day at Land Between The Lakes

Land Between the Lakes - LBLGolden Pond, KY – Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area will waive fees at the Elk & Bison Prairie and riding permits at Wranglers Campground on Monday, January 19th, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The Forest Service participates in the fee waiver day along with the National Park Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Land Management.

Hear Elk Bugling at Land Between the Lakes Elk & Bison Prairie

Land Between the Lakes - LBLGolden Pond, KY – Every fall, beginning in September, mature bull elk in the Elk & Bison Prairie at Land Between The Lakes begin their mating season. Bugling actually sounds more like a loud squeal. The Elk & Bison Prairie is open seven days a week, from dawn to dusk.

The prairie features a 3.5-mile paved loop road. Interpretive stops help visitors view wildlife and learn more about this native habitat.

LBL to Waiver Fee in Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

January 16, 2014

Land Between the Lakes - LBLGolden Pond, KY – Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area will be waiving fees at participating day-use facilities in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. General admission to the Elk and Bison Prairie will be free and Wranglers Campground will also be waiving day-use riding fees.

“We encourage visitors to come out and enjoy numerous free outdoor recreation opportunities year round,” said LBL Customer Service Manager Brian Beisel. “Bring your family and friends and experience hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, picnicking, and scenic driving in the great outdoors.”

Land Between the Lakes - LBLGolden Pond, KY – Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area invites you to any of the programs listed below or to come outside to camp, hike, bike, ride, drive, relax, fish, boat, hunt, learn, picnic, and more.

The Elk & Bison Prairie, drive through wildlife viewing area, is open all year, dawn until dusk. Admission is $5.00 per vehicle.

Hear Fall Bugling and Enjoy Elk Calves at Land Between the Lakes’ Elk and Bison Prairie

Land Between the LakesGolden Pond, KY – Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area invites everyone to experience the annual magic of elk bugling in the Elk & Bison Prairie. The bugle, which actually sounds more like a loud squeal, is the mating call of the mature bull elk.

“We’ve already heard a few bugles,” stated Curtis Fowler, LBL’s Range and Wildlife Technician. “The best is yet to come! The peak of bugling season usually occurs from mid-September to mid-October; this is one of the most exciting times to drive through the prairie.” [Read more]
