Tennessee Department of Health reports First Death from Vaping Associated Respiratory Disease

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health (THD) has reported one death in a patient with serious respiratory disease associated with use of electronic cigarettes or other vaping devices. This is the first such death reported in Tennessee.
“We are extremely saddened by this loss of life and extend our sincere condolences to the patient’s family,” said Tennessee Health Commissioner Lisa Piercey, MD, MBA, FAAP.

Dallas, TX – According to new research from the Tobacco Center for Regulatory Science of the American Heart Association flavors motivate individuals to start using electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and are also associated with a stronger perception of being addicted to e-cigarettes, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives.
Researchers surveyed about 1,500 U.S. e-cigarette users, aged 18 and older, to determine whether different types of flavors played a role in getting them to start and to continue vaping.

THD reports Six Cases of Vaping Association Respiratory Disease

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health has reported six cases of suspected serious respiratory disease among people who use electronic cigarettes or other vaping devices.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Food and Drug Administration are investigating a cluster of severe pulmonary disease among people who use e-cigarettes or vape, with 215 cases reported to date in 25 states.

TDH Urges Providers to Report Cases of Vaping-associated Respiratory Illness

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) is asking health care providers across the state to report any cases of suspected serious respiratory illness they treat among patients who use electronic cigarettes or other vaping devices.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a cluster of severe pulmonary disease among people who use e-cigarettes or vape, with more than 150 cases reported to date in 16 states.

New CDC Data Highlights E-Cigarette Epidemic’s Threat to Nation’s Youth

Washington, D.C. – Results of the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlight the rapidly growing popularity of electronic cigarettes among youth.
The results show that 4.9 million middle- and high-school students were current users of some type of tobacco product in 2018, an increase from 3.6 million in 2017, and that there were in excess of 3.5 million youth e-cigarette users in 2018, 1.5 million more than in 2017.

Tennessee Department of Health issues Public Health Advisory on Nicotine/Chemicals Delivery Systems

Since the first TDH advisory on ENDS was issued in February, 2013 accumulating evidence has increased the level of concern regarding the risks posed by these products to the health of all persons involved, especially children.

Reinforces Need for Tough Restrictions on Sales and Marketing to Youth
Washington, D.C. – The American Heart Association issued new policy recommendations today on the use of e-cigarettes and their impact on tobacco-control efforts. The guidance was published in the association’s journal, Circulation.
Based on the current evidence, the association’s position is that e-cigarettes that contain nicotine are tobacco products and should be subject to all laws that apply to these products.
