Nashville, TN – The 2020 spring turkey hunting season is set to be open for business in Tennessee beginning Saturday, April 4th, 2020. Turkey hunting is an excellent way to keep social distance, enjoy the outdoors, and take part in a popular activity which has seen tremendous growth in recent years.
The coronavirus outbreak has affected many aspects of normal life. Fortunately for the thousands of Tennesseans who head to the woods each spring in pursuit of the wily gamebird, the season will go on as scheduled through May 17th.

TWRA Executive Director Ed Carter to retire in May

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) executive director Ed Carter has announced that he will retire effective May 31st, 2020. He made the announcement during the February meeting of the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting on Friday.
Director Carter assumed his current role in 2009. He began his career in 1972 and has held positions in the divisions of Law Enforcement, Information and Education, and as TWRA Region II assistant manager. He became TWRA’s first Chief of the Boating Division when the division was formed in 1990.

Recovering America’s Wildlife Act introduced in U.S. Senate

Nashville, TN – The introduction of the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act (S.3223) has been introduced this week in the United States Senate. Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander is one of the co-sponsors of the bipartisan legislation that recommends funding for those fish and wildlife species of greatest conservation need across the country.
“Senator Alexander has championed several wildlife-related issues specific to Tennessee and his leadership on this national issue will be instrumental,” said Ed Carter, executive director of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. “His longtime personal interest in wildlife and the outdoors allows a unique personal connection as an advocate for this critical legislation.”
Scientists estimate that one third of all U.S. wildlife species are already imperiled or are vulnerable. Habitat loss, invasive species, and severe weather have all taken a severe toll on birds, mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies, and bees. All types of wildlife are declining—in many cases dramatically. We need urgent action to protect vulnerable wildlife. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act is the solution we need.
TWRA announces World Record pending for Non-Typical Deer Harvested in Sumner County

Nashville, TN – A buck harvested in Sumner County during the recent muzzleloader season, has completed a step toward becoming a world record for a non-typical deer rack.
Boone and Crockett officials spent several hours on Monday (January 9th) scoring the 47-point buck tabbed the “Tennessee Tucker Buck” as the Nashville headquarters of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The buck was harvested by 26-year old Gallatin resident Stephen Tucker.

Health, Agriculture & TWRA Leaders Ask Tennesseans to Help Fight Deadly Disease
Nashville, TN – In the first three months of this year, the Tennessee Department of Health State Public Health Laboratory has confirmed rabies in three wild animals and five pet dogs and cats.
The deadly disease is causing concern for officials with the departments of Health and Agriculture and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, who believe some may have forgotten or are not aware of the impact of rabies.

Portions of Northwest Tennessee Closed for Young Sportsman Deer Hunt
Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission has voted to close portions of northwest Tennessee for this weekend’s Young Sportsman Deer Hunt due to severe flooding along the Mississippi River.
The commission met via conference call on Thursday morning to discuss the flooding in areas in the West Tennessee area and how it would impact this weekend’s scheduled two-day Young Sportsman Deer Hunt.
“The flood waters in West Tennessee, occurring uncharacteristically during deer hunting season, offered a unique challenge as the commissioners and agency strive to protect wildlife but still offer as much opportunity as possible,” said TWRA Executive Director Ed Carter. “After hearing from constituents about deer being stranded on high ground, the commissioners asked for a teleconference briefing and asked multiple questions ranging from the impact to the deer herd to those who might pursue deer in flooded areas.” [Read more]
Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission sets Two Buck Limit for State’s 2015-16 Hunting Seasons

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission (TFWC) has voted to reduce the white-tailed buck limit for the 2015-16 seasons. Deer hunters will now be able to take a total of two bucks throughout the deer hunting seasons.
After months of discussion and consideration, the action came during the TFWC’s May meeting which concluded Friday at the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s Ray Bell Region III Building. [Read more]
TWRA announces New Long-Term Funding for Federal Trout Hatchery Operation, Stocking Program

Erwin, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR) joined U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander and leaders from the Tennessee Valley Authority in an announcement to provide long-term funding for trout production and stocking in 13 TVA dam tailwaters and reservoirs in Tennessee and Georgia.
The announcement for the multi-agency agreement to the USFWS came in a press conference at the Erwin National Fish Hatchery on Monday (May 11th). The agreement ensures popular trout stocking programs in the region will continue beyond 2016, when a temporary TVA funding agreement reached in 2013 is set to expire. [Read more]
