Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security announces Eight Year Driver’s License

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security announced beginning January 4th, 2016, Tennesseans will be able to renew their driver license every eight years instead of five years. The change will include all classifications of driver licenses and identification licenses.
The legislation to increase the renewal years was proposed during the 2015 legislative session. Senator Nicely and Representative Goins introduced the bill to help decrease wait times and improve customer traffic flow at driver services centers.

Tennessee Department of Safety issues New Driver License or ID Cards due to Printing Error

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security today announced that it had re-issued new permanent driver licenses or photo ID cards to citizens who recently received a card with incorrect content due to a printing error.
The driver licenses or ID cards were incorrectly issued with the phrase “Not for Federal Identification” to 3,500 Tennesseans. The cards were issued to citizens who applied or renewed their driver license or ID card at state driver services centers on February 17th through February 19th. [Read more]
Tennessee Highway Patrol encourages Back To School Safety

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Tracy Trott is reminding motorists to exercise an abundance of caution in neighborhoods and around school zones during the upcoming 2013-2014 school year. State Troopers will target speeders, distracted drivers and those who disregard stopped school buses that are loading and unloading children.
State Troopers issued 5,247 citations in school zones during the 2012-2013 school year. That’s up from 3,856 citations issued in 2011-12. Last year’s citations included 759 speeding violations and two citations for passing a stopped school bus.

Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security announces Public Warning of Identity Theft Phone Scam

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security today announced a warning to citizens about a phone scam involving driver licenses.
Several citizens in west Tennessee have reported receiving phone calls regarding an issue with their 2012-2013 driver license renewals. The unidentified caller(s) has requested the citizens’ social security numbers. There have been no reports that citizens have provided this information.
Tennessee Highway Patrol Urges Motorists to Act Responsibly this St. Patrick’s Day

Nashville, TN – In preparation for this weekend’s St. Patrick’s Day holiday, the Tennessee Highway Patrol is gearing up for a statewide DUI enforcement campaign with more than 50 sobriety and driver license checkpoints planned across the state. The 2012 St. Patrick’s Day holiday period begins at midnight, Saturday, March 17th and ends at 11:59pm, Sunday March 18th.

New Hours Effective August 15th, 2011
Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security today announced the implementation of new business hours for its 49 Driver Service Centers across the state. Effective Monday, August 15th, all Driver Service Centers will operate during the hours of 8:30am to 5:00pm. Monday through Friday.

New Card Features Enhanced Security, Replaces Old Cards Upon Expiration
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons on Tuesday announced the state will soon issue new and improved driver licenses and identification cards. The new license and its updated security features will help combat document fraud and protect the identities of Tennesseans by using the latest credentialing technology. This is the first major revision of Tennessee driver licenses and ID cards since 2003.
“A top priority of the Department of Safety and Homeland Security is safeguarding the identity of Tennessee citizens to prevent identity theft and document fraud,” said Commissioner Gibbons. “The new cards will be the most secure our state has issued to date.”
