TWRA Requests Public Input on Proposed Chronic Wasting Disease Strategic Plan

Nashville, TN – A 30-day public comment period is now open for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s new five-year chronic wasting disease (CWD) strategic plan.
The CWD Response and Management plan will serve as a guiding document for TWRA staff and ensure the best science is applied in efforts to control the disease.
Monitoring CWD Gets Easier with Introduction of New Tool

Nashville, TN – Tennessee deer hunters have just got a new tool for keeping their eyes on chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer and elk herds in the state and across North America.
Since its discovery, CWD has been a major concern to hunters and wildlife professionals alike. Part of the concern has been the difficulty that state and provincial wildlife agencies have in coordinating and communicating information about CWD to hunters and other interested publics.
Officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and partners have had a CWD Response Plan in place since prior to the first confirmation of the disease in the state in late 2018.
TWRA reports Deer tests Positive for CWD in Crockett County, Hardin County, Dyer County now High-Risk

Nashville, TN – A deer harvested in Crockett County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD), according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA).
The CWD-positive deer was a 3 1/2 -year-old buck and changes Crockett County from high-risk to positive for CWD and Dyer County changes to high-risk due to its proximity.
TWRA reports CWD-Positive Deer found in Weakley County

Nashville, TN – the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) reports a deer harvested in Weakley County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD). The CWD-positive deer changes Weakley County from being a high-risk CWD county to a CWD-positive county.
Deer carcass exportation and wildlife feeding restrictions have been in effect since the county became high-risk due to the proximity of a positive deer in Henry County and remain in effect.
TWRA reports CWD-Positive Deer Found in Gibson County, McNairy County

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) announces that Gibson County and McNairy County are now positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD) after confirmation through multiple tests from hunter-harvested deer.
These results change the CWD status of both counties from high-risk to positive and makes Carroll County high-risk because of the proximity to the new positive deer. TWRA announces 2021 Muzzleloader Season for Deer Set to Open Saturday

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) reports that the 2021 statewide muzzleloader/archery season for deer opens in Tennessee on Saturday, November 6th and continues through Friday, November 19th in all of Tennessee’s deer hunting units, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
The opening of muzzleloader season in the state has a permanent opening date of the third Saturday before Thanksgiving.
TFWC changes Hunting, Fishing Licenses to 360 Day Duration

Kingsport, TN – The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission (TFWC) approved changing licenses to 365-day duration instead of expiring at the end of February each year at its September meeting. The new rule will go into effect beginning March 1st, 2022.
The TWFC also heard reports on chronic wasting disease (CWD), quail, boat ramps, and corrective actions to be taken on quota hunt drawings among agenda items at the meeting which concluded Friday.
TWRA reports CWD Positive Deer found in Henry County

Nashville, TN – Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) staff responded to a call in Henry County about a 3.5-year-old doe who was thin and exhibiting strange behavior. Multiple tests confirmed that chronic wasting disease (CWD) was present.
This result changes Henry County’s status to positive and Weakley County to high-risk. As a result, carcass transport, feeding, and mineral placement regulations are immediately triggered in both Henry and Weakley counties. For more information visit CWDinTennessee.com.
TWRA announces Deer Harvest Incentive Program offered in Unit CWD

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation have partnered to offer an incentive program to increase the deer harvest in Unit CWD. The program features two levels of rewards to incentivize deer harvest resulting in a free license for the 2021-22 license year.
The top tier first prize would be a free sportsman’s license for 2021-22. Any hunter who harvests four antlerless deer and four antlered deer through January 8th, 2021 would receive a free Sportsman’s license.
