April Gas Prices Hit Four-Year Highs

AAATampa, FL – Monday is the conclusion to what was the most expensive April for gas prices in four years.

Tennessee gas prices averaged $2.64 on Sunday. Click here to view today’s average. Sunday’s daily average is 5 cents more than last week, 18 cents more than last month, and 51 cents more than last year. It is also the highest daily average since September. The national average price of $2.81 is the highest in more than three years (November 2014).

American Heart AssociationNashville, TN – Until a recent outbreak of Zika virus disease was associated with babies born with microcephaly, many had not heard of the birth defect. Tennessee Department of Health data show approximately 45 to 50 cases occur in Tennessee each year.

Babies with microcephaly are born with heads that are smaller than expected. This can be associated with developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, problems with hearing or vision and seizures.

TDH Urges Residents & Travelers to Have Heightened Awareness about Protection Strategies

Tennessee Department of HealthNashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health today has received confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the first person in the state to test positive for Zika virus disease. The individual had recently traveled to South America before returning to east Tennessee.

“We have been expecting an imported case of Zika virus disease and we believe more infections are likely as people travel to and from areas where the disease is currently being transmitted,” said TDH Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH.

Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.

Hummingbird Festival Returns to LBL’s Woodlands Nature Station August 2nd and 3rd

Popular Hummingbird Festival Returns to Land Between The Lakes’ Woodlands Nature Station

Land Between the LakesGolden Pond, KY – Come out to Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area and witness the migration of the Ruby-throated hummingbird during the annual Hummingbird Festival Saturday & Sunday, August 4th-5th, at Woodlands Nature Station.

“Hummingbird migration in this area is at its peak in August,” said Nature Station Interpreter Carrie Szwed. “A large number of hummingbirds stop here on their journey south to Mexico and Central America. During this time, up to 200 hummingbirds visit our feeders in a single day. The festival is an opportunity to be a part of this awesome event.”
