Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office Commemorates National Fire Prevention Week

Nashville, TN – Location matters when it comes to your family’s smoke alarms. This year’s Fire Prevention Week (October 4th-10th) campaign, “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm!” stresses the importance of placing working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of a home, including the basement.
Along with firefighters and safety advocates nationwide, the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) during Fire Prevention Week to remind Tennesseans about the importance of working smoke alarms.

Nashville, TN – The American Red Cross is helping people impacted by the frigid cold air covering two-thirds of the country, and offers steps people can take to stay safe during this dangerous weather.
“Our volunteers remain on stand-by to respond if there is a significant, unforeseen, emergency incident or event that displaces individuals from their normal place of dwelling which would cause us to open an emergency shelter,” said David Kitchen, Regional Disaster Program Officer. “We have been closely monitoring the weather system for the past several days and as soon as we realized that the flash freeze had the potential to strand motorists as well as to cause life-threatening situations, we immediately began activating our disaster action plan.” [Read more]

Two Rivers Chapter Volunteers Working to Meet Emergency Needs
Clarksville, TN – Severe spring storms and flash floods poured torrential rain over much of Tennessee on Saturday morning and again in the evening.
Eight homes were destroyed from the flood with 26 others sustaining major damage, across 4 counties including Henry, Houston, Montgomery and Stewart. The Red Cross responded immediately to provide food, shelter and emotional support to help families who had been affected by the storms. [Read more]

Washington D.C. – In the aftermath of the tragedy that struck America a decade ago, hundreds of AmeriCorps members stepped forward to help, offering assistance to the injured, serving as family caseworkers, and helping those displaced from Ground Zero find housing and other services. For many, their service was a life-changing experience, inspiring them to pursue lives of public service.
All across the country, the events of that day and the heroism of our first responders inspired thousands of then-teenagers and 20-somethings to give back. Many voluntarily enlisted during wartime and knowingly risked their lives to protect our country. Others chose to serve their country through AmeriCorps, meeting vital community needs in education, health, disaster relief, and other areas. Red Cross Blood Supply Drops to Critically Low Levels

All Blood Types Needed
Washington, D.C. – The American Red Cross issued an appeal for blood donors to roll up a sleeve and address a critical shortage across the nation.
Many donors are busy or traveling, school is out of session and donations have dropped dramatically. In May and June, while demand for blood products remained steady, donations were at the lowest level the Red Cross has seen during this timeframe in over a dozen years. Because of that, the Red Cross needs blood donors now more than ever. All types are needed, but especially O negative, which can be used to treat any patient. [Read more]
