\"TennesseeNashville, TN <\/strong>– The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) today announces the annual \u201cTop Ten\u201d categories of consumer complaints. The utilities category ranked as the No. 1 complaint category with more than 480 consumer complaints.<\/p>\n

TDCI\u2019s Top Ten complaint categories were compiled from 5,099 total complaints fielded by the Consumer Affairs Division during calendar year 2014.<\/p>\n

Top 10 Consumer Complaints<\/p><\/div>\n

The Division investigated and ultimately closed 4,961 of those cases. Overall, the number of consumer complaints dipped slightly in 2014 compared to 2013 when 5,382 complaints were reviewed by Consumer Affairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Division of Consumer Affairs protects Tennesseans by quickly investigating complaints and taking action where necessary in order to create a level playing field for consumers and businesses,\u201d said TDCI Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak. \u201cWe encourage consumers to educate themselves and become better informed before they buy. When consumers are dissatisfied with businesses and can find no other solution for their problem, they should file a complaint with Consumer Affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it comes to utilities, most customer complaints focused on Tennesseans\u2019 dissatisfaction with nationally known phone, cable and Internet service providers\u2019 prices, billing practices and services.<\/p>\n

The 2014 Top Ten consumer complaint categories are as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  2. Debtor\/Creditor:<\/strong> 365<\/li>\n
  3. Landlord\/Tenant:<\/strong> 334<\/li>\n
  4. Insurance:<\/strong> 319<\/li>\n
  5. Health Services & Products:<\/strong> 315<\/li>\n
  6. Timeshares:<\/strong> 302<\/li>\n
  7. Home Improvement:<\/strong> 290<\/li>\n
  8. Used Car Sales:<\/strong> 247<\/li>\n
  9. Gas Gouging:<\/strong> 239<\/li>\n
  10. Professional Services:<\/strong> 229<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
