{"id":9302,"date":"2014-11-26T23:30:08","date_gmt":"2014-11-27T05:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=9302"},"modified":"2014-11-26T14:57:09","modified_gmt":"2014-11-26T20:57:09","slug":"thanksgiving-day-marks-two-year-anniversary-of-states-get-alarmed-tennessee-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2014\/11\/26\/thanksgiving-day-marks-two-year-anniversary-of-states-get-alarmed-tennessee-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Thanksgiving Day Marks Two-Year Anniversary of state&#8217;s &#8220;Get Alarmed Tennessee&#8221; program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-67254\" title=\"Tennessee State Fire Marshal\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Tennessee-State-Fire-Marshal-200x184.jpg\" alt=\"Tennessee State Fire Marshal\" width=\"200\" height=\"184\" \/>Nashville, TN <\/strong>\u2014 As families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving Day this week, the occasion marks the two-year anniversary of the launch of the State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office \u201cGet Alarmed Tennessee\u201d smoke-alarm distribution program, which has helped create the single largest fire mortality rate reduction in state history.<\/p>\n<p>On November 27th, 2012, the State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office began the \u201cGet Alarmed Tennessee\u201d program by giving the program\u2019s first 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms to the Elizabethton Fire Department in Elizabethton,Tennessee.<!--more-->Since then, the State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office has distributed more than 66,300 smoke alarms in two years\u2019 time to nearly 400 local partners across the state. Every 10 days, approximately 900 alarms are given to partnering organizations statewide.<\/p>\n<p>The alarms, which are 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms, are installed in high fire-risk homes throughout Tennessee at a rate of 300 alarms per week. For every 900 smoke alarms distributed, one life has been potentially saved. <sup><a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018Get Alarmed Tennessee\u2019 program has helped save lives across the state and strengthened communities against the threat of fire hazards,\u201d said state Department of Commerce and Insurance Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak. \u201cPartnerships between the State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office and our local fire prevention partners have helped make this program a success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cGet Alarmed Tennessee\u201d program came on the heels of Tennessee gaining a tragic reputation as having one of the highest fire mortality rates in the U.S. When Governor Bill Haslam was sworn into office in 2010, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reported that Tennessee\u2019s 2006-2010 fire mortality rate was 17.7 deaths per million, giving Tennessee the 6<sup>th<\/sup> highest fire mortality rate in the United States.<sup><a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h4>The facts are clear:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>One Tennessean perishes in a fatal structure fire every four days<\/li>\n<li>More than 70 percent of these fatal fires had no working smoke alarms reported present. According to the NFPA, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a reported home fire by half. <sup><a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tennessee\u2019s fortunes have changed as the \u201cGet Alarmed\u201d program has gained traction. The State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office has recorded a reduction of more than 20 percent in both the number of reported structure fires <em>and<\/em> the state\u2019s fire mortality rate since 2010. <strong><em>This reduction to<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>13.7 deaths per million is<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>the single largest fire mortality rate reduction in our state\u2019s recorded history.<\/em><\/strong> (New state fire mortality rankings comprising the years 2011-15 will be reported in 2017.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">1<\/a> 11\/25\/14 State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office DD: 66,364 distributed alarms\/71 people = 934 alarms distributed per life saved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\">2<\/a> NFPA, U.S. Unintentional Fire Death Rates By State, 2012<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"#_ftnref3\" name=\"_ftn3\">3<\/a> NFPA, Smoke Alarm Presence and Performance in U.S. Home Fires, 2009<\/p>\n<p>The Division of Fire Prevention is the State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office, which is part of the Department of Commerce and Insurance. The division works to protect consumers while ensuring fair competition for industries and professionals who do business in Tennessee. The division includes the state\u2019s building and safety codes enforcement operations, as well as arson and explosives investigations.
