{"id":9165,"date":"2014-10-28T06:00:11","date_gmt":"2014-10-28T11:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=9165"},"modified":"2014-10-28T04:11:31","modified_gmt":"2014-10-28T09:11:31","slug":"american-heart-association-says-trans-fats-still-weighing-americans-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2014\/10\/28\/american-heart-association-says-trans-fats-still-weighing-americans-down\/","title":{"rendered":"American Heart Association says Trans Fats still weighing Americans down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-56563\" title=\"American Heart Association\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/American-Heart-Association-new-logo-480x230.jpg\" alt=\"American Heart Association\" width=\"240\" height=\"115\" \/><strong>Dallas, TX<\/strong> &#8211; Good news, bad news: The amount of <em>trans<\/em> fats we eat has declined over the last 30 years, but we\u2019re still consuming more than recommended.<\/p>\n<p>In a study reported in the <em>Journal of the American Heart Association<\/em>, researchers reviewed results from a series of six surveys as part of the Minnesota Heart Survey in 1980-2009.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Fats-Infographic.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-287303\" title=\"Fats Infographic\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Fats-Infographic-480x378.jpg\" alt=\"Fats Infographic\" width=\"480\" height=\"378\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>More than 12,000 adults 25-74 years old in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area revealed that:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Trans <\/em>fat intake dropped by about one-third in men (32 percent) and women (35 percent).<\/li>\n<li>Average intake of the omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) was steady, but current intake is still very low.<\/li>\n<li>Intake of saturated fats dropped, but still account for about 11.4 percent of daily calories for men and women. The American Heart Association recommends limiting saturated fat to 5-6 percent of total calories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a downward trend in <em>trans<\/em> and saturated fat intake levels, but it\u2019s clear that we still have room for improvement,\u201d said Mary Ann Honors, Ph.D., lead study author and an epidemiology researcher at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Saturated fats and <em>trans <\/em>fats can increase the risk of heart disease because they can raise bad cholesterol levels and lower good cholesterol levels. Saturated fats are found in products derived from animals, such as meat and full-fat dairy products, as well as some tropical oils such as coconut or palm oil. <em>Trans<\/em> fats are mainly found in processed, fried and commercially baked foods such as pastries, pizza, pies, cookies and crackers.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that men consumed about 1.9 percent of their daily calories from <em>trans<\/em> fats and women about 1.7 percent. The American Heart Association recommends limiting <em>trans <\/em>fats to no more than 1 percent of total calories consumed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make your diet more in line with the recommendations, use the nutritional panel on food labels to choose foods with little or no <em>trans<\/em> fats,\u201d Honors said.<\/p>\n<p>[320left]Researchers also analyzed the participants\u2019 intake of omega-3 fatty acids, which has not changed significantly in the last thirty years. Omega-3 fatty acids may improve cardiovascular disease risk by lowering risk of abnormal heartbeat, cutting triglyceride levels and improving blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>The American Heart Association recommends that people without documented coronary heart disease (CHD) eat a variety of fish at least twice a week, with an emphasis on fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and herring, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
