No Construction-Related Lane Closures on Tennessee Highways July 3rd-7th<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\"TennesseeNashville, TN <\/strong> \u2013 Road construction won\u2019t slow motorists across Tennessee over the July 4th holiday. The Tennessee Department of Transportation will suspend all construction-related lane closures on interstates and state routes beginning at 6:00am on Thursday, July 3rd, 2014 through 6:00am on Monday, July 7th to provide maximum roadway capacity for holiday travelers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always anticipate heavier than normal traffic on Tennessee\u2019s interstates and state routes this time of year,\u201d said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. \u201cSuspending lane closures for the July 4th holiday travel period will help travelers reach their destinations safely and without unnecessary delays.\u201d<\/p>\n

Motorists will still encounter some long term lane closures on construction projects. While lane closure activity will be stopped, workers may be on site in construction zones and reduced speed limits in work zones will still be in effect. Drivers convicted of speeding through work zones where workers are present face a fine of $250.00 to $500.00, plus court fees and possible increased insurance premiums.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease buckle up and observe the rules of the road,\u201d said Governor\u2019s Highway Safety Office Director Kendell Poole. \u201cDrivers can be assured there will be an increased law enforcement presence on Tennessee\u2019s roadways throughout this week and weekend in an effort to ensure that everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July holiday.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to AAA projections, 41 million Americans, that\u2019s 1.9 percent more than last year, will travel 50 miles or more away from home this holiday weekend. Nearly 85 percent of them will drive. AAA estimates 742,000 Tennesseans will hit the roadways. July 3th and July 6th are expected to be the busiest travel days of the holiday period.<\/p>\n

Travelers are reminded to dial 511 from any land-line or cellular phone to access valuable information about travel conditions anytime, or log on to TDOT is also on Twitter. For statewide traffic tweets follow TN511<\/a> or for regional traffic information follow Nashville511<\/a>, Chattanooga511<\/a>, Memphis511<\/a> and Knoxville511<\/a> .<\/p>\n

Smart phone users can use the new TDOT SmartWay Mobile website at http:\/\/m.tdot.tn.gov\/SmartWay\/<\/a> to access TDOT\u2019s SmartWay cameras and messages displayed on overhead Dynamic Message Signs.<\/p>\n

Motorists are reminded to use all motorist information tools responsibly. Drivers should refrain from texting, tweeting or using a mobile phone while operating a vehicle.
