{"id":8495,"date":"2014-05-08T08:00:08","date_gmt":"2014-05-08T13:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=8495"},"modified":"2014-05-07T20:43:51","modified_gmt":"2014-05-08T01:43:51","slug":"american-heart-association-says-marijuana-use-may-increase-heart-complications-in-young-middle-aged-adults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2014\/05\/08\/american-heart-association-says-marijuana-use-may-increase-heart-complications-in-young-middle-aged-adults\/","title":{"rendered":"American Heart Association says Marijuana use may increase Heart Complications in young, middle-aged Adults"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-56563\" title=\"American Heart Association\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/American-Heart-Association-new-logo-480x230.jpg\" alt=\"American Heart Association\" width=\"205\" height=\"98\" \/><strong>Dallas, TX<\/strong> &#8211; Marijuana use may result in cardiovascular-related complications \u2014 even death \u2014 among young and middle-aged adults, according to a French study reported in the <em>Journal of the American Heart Association.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn prior research, we identified several remarkable cases of cardiovascular complications as the reasons for hospital admission of young marijuana users,\u201d said \u00c9milie Jouanjus, Pharm.D., Ph.D., lead author of the study and a medical faculty member at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Toulouse in Toulouse, France.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Marijuana-use-infographic.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-225694\" title=\"American Heart Association says Marijuana use may increase Heart Complications in young, middle-aged Adults\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Marijuana-use-infographic-480x240.jpg\" alt=\"American Heart Association says Marijuana use may increase Heart Complications in young, middle-aged Adults\" width=\"480\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><!--more-->&#8220;This unexpected finding deserved to be further analyzed, especially given that the medicinal use of marijuana has become more prevalent and some governments are legalizing its use,\u201d stated Jouanjus.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers analyzed serious cardiovascular-related complications following marijuana use that was reported to the French Addictovigilance Network in 2006-10.<\/p>\n<p>They identified 35 cases of cardiovascular and vascular conditions related to the heart, brain and limbs.<\/p>\n<h3>Among their findings:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Most of the patients were male, average age 34.3 years.<\/li>\n<li>Nearly 2 percent (35 of the 1,979) marijuana-related complications were cardiovascular complications.<\/li>\n<li>Of the 35 cases, 22 were heart-related, including 20 heart attacks; 10 were peripheral with diseases related to arteries in the limbs; and three were related to the brain\u2019s arteries.<\/li>\n<li>The percentage of reported cardiovascular complications more than tripled from 2006 to 2010.<\/li>\n<li>Nine patients, or 25.6 percent, died.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Researchers note that marijuana use and any resulting health complications are likely underreported.
