Horton\u2019s World War II service during a ceremony today.<\/p>\n<p>The event was hosted by Morningside of Gallatin to honor Horton who waited 70 years to receive the medals and recognition for his service onboard the USS Denver in 1943 and 1944.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_217688\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/James-L.-Horton.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-217688\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-217688\" title=\"First Class Petty Officer James L. Horton\" alt=\"First Class Petty Officer James L. Horton\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/James-L.-Horton-480x360.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-217688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First Class Petty Officer James L. Horton<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->Horton was 23-years old when he served on the USS Denver with 300 other shipmates during World War II.<\/p>\n<p>The Gallatin native was aboard the ship when it was on a mission to regain control of Bougainville Island from Japan.<\/p>\n<p>During the mission, the ship sustained an air attack that killed 20 crew members. Horton\u2019s mission after World War II was to help recover prisoners of war.<\/p>\n<p>Grinder presented Horton with the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal (1 silver service star, 3 bronze service stars), America Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Combat Action Medal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a privilege to recognize the World War II service of James Horton,\u201d Grinder said. \u201cHe is an American patriot and Volunteer State hero who has waited way too long to receive the recognition he deserved 70 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 93-year old Sumner County native is the only surviving Tennessean to serve on the USS Denver during combat in World War II and is one of only six surviving shipmates nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee State Representative Terri Lynn Weaver (R-Lancaster) performed the \u201cStar Spangled Banner\u201d for the event and the American Legion Post 17 Color Guard in Gallatin posted Colors for the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs visit <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tn.gov\/veteran\" >www.tn.gov\/veteran<\/a> or <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/myTDVA\" >www.facebook.com\/myTDVA<\/a> .<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First Class Petty Officer James L.
