{"id":8351,"date":"2014-03-18T04:00:17","date_gmt":"2014-03-18T09:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=8351"},"modified":"2014-03-18T00:33:56","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T05:33:56","slug":"tennessee-department-of-commerce-and-insurance-warns-of-ride-share-auto-insurance-coverage-gaps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2014\/03\/18\/tennessee-department-of-commerce-and-insurance-warns-of-ride-share-auto-insurance-coverage-gaps\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Warns of Ride-Share Auto Insurance Coverage Gaps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-131388\" title=\"Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance\" alt=\"Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Tennessee-Department-of-Commerce-and-Insurance.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"92\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Nashville, TN<\/b> &#8211; Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak is warning Tennesseans of potential auto insurance gaps for individuals working as drivers for Transportation Network Companies (TNC), such as Lyft, UberX, and Sidecar.<\/p>\n<p>These ride-share programs provide pre-arranged transportation services for compensation using an online-enabled platform to connect passengers with drivers using the driver\u2019s personal vehicle.<!--more-->\u201cThe Department wants Tennesseans to know that most standard auto insurance policies contain exclusions for livery or driving for hire,\u201d said McPeak. \u201cThese gaps can leave individuals in insurance limbo without the coverage needed to protect their vehicle and passengers in the event of an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While TNCs that are approved by municipal licensing authorities may be required to maintain liability insurance, they might not have medical payments coverage, comprehensive, collision, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, or other optional coverages for enrolled vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>This means that the TNC\u2019s liability policy may not provide coverage for: 1) bodily injury to the TNC driver, 2) damages to the TNC driver\u2019s car, or 3) bodily injury or physical damage caused by an uninsured or underinsured motorist.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, insurance companies may deny coverage to TNC drivers that are driving passengers for payment based on livery or similar exclusions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recommend that individuals enrolled in a TNC program contact their insurance agent, broker, or company about potential gaps in their personal automobile coverage,\u201d said McPeak. \u201cEnrolled drivers may need to consider buying a commercial policy with medical payments, comprehensive, collision, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage to be certain that the necessary coverage exists in the case of an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Individuals with questions can contact the Department of Commerce and Insurance\u2019s Policy Analysis Division at 615.741.2825.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"Drafts\/tn.gov\/commerce\">Department of Commerce and Insurance<\/a> works to protect consumers while ensuring fair competition for industries and professionals who do business in Tennessee.
