{"id":8328,"date":"2014-03-12T04:00:24","date_gmt":"2014-03-12T09:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=8328"},"modified":"2014-03-11T22:42:34","modified_gmt":"2014-03-12T03:42:34","slug":"american-stroke-association-reports-blood-clot-risk-remains-higher-than-normal-for-at-least-12-weeks-after-women-deliver-babies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2014\/03\/12\/american-stroke-association-reports-blood-clot-risk-remains-higher-than-normal-for-at-least-12-weeks-after-women-deliver-babies\/","title":{"rendered":"American Stroke Association reports Blood Clot risk remains higher than normal for at least 12 weeks after Women deliver Babies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-120054\" title=\"American Stroke Association - American Heart Association\" alt=\"American Stroke Association - American Heart Association\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/American-Stroke-Association.gif\" width=\"200\" height=\"114\" \/><strong>San Diego, CA<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/Conditions\/More\/Understand-Your-Risk-for-Excessive-Blood-Clotting_UCM_448771_Article.jsp\"  target=\"_blank\">Women\u2019s blood clot risk<\/a> remains elevated for at least 12 weeks after delivering a baby \u2014 twice as long as previously recognized, according to a large study presented at the American Stroke Association\u2019s International Stroke Conference 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The chance of a blood clot rises during pregnancy, when platelets and other blood-clotting factors increase.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>The risk peaks around the time of delivery, but researchers found that afterwards it remained:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>10.8 times higher during weeks 0-6;<\/li>\n<li>2.2 times higher during weeks 7-12; and<\/li>\n<li>1.4 times higher (a non-significant rise) during weeks 13-18.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By weeks 19-24, the chance of a blood clot returned to what it would have been if a woman had not delivered a baby.<\/p>\n<p>Fewer than one in 10,000 women suffer a pregnancy-related blood clot six to 12 weeks after delivery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile rare, blood clots are a serious cause of disability and death in pregnant and post-partum women, and many members of our research team have cared for young women with these complications,\u201d said Hooman Kamel, M.D., lead researcher and assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and the Brain and Mind Research Institute of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have recently delivered a baby, seek medical attention if you develop symptoms such as: chest pain or pressure; difficulty breathing; swelling or pain in one leg; sudden severe headache; or sudden loss of speech, vision, balance, or strength on one side of your body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers calculated the odds using data on 1,687,930 women admitted for labor and delivery at a California hospital in 2005-10. Of those, 1,015 women had a clot during the following 1.5 years.
