{"id":8298,"date":"2014-03-06T06:00:34","date_gmt":"2014-03-06T12:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=8298"},"modified":"2014-11-20T15:19:29","modified_gmt":"2014-11-20T21:19:29","slug":"according-to-the-american-stroke-association-most-people-have-access-to-stroke-care-but-few-get-recommended-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2014\/03\/06\/according-to-the-american-stroke-association-most-people-have-access-to-stroke-care-but-few-get-recommended-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"According to the American Stroke Association most people have access to stroke care, but few get recommended treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-120054\" title=\"American Stroke Association - American Heart Association\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/American-Stroke-Association.gif\" alt=\"American Stroke Association - American Heart Association\" width=\"200\" height=\"114\" \/><strong>San Diego, CA<\/strong> &#8211; Four out of five people in the United States live within an hour\u2019s drive of a hospital equipped to treat acute stroke \u2014 yet very few get recommended treatment, according to research presented at the American Stroke Association\u2019s International Stroke Conference 2014.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>Of the more than 370,000 Medicare stroke claims for 2011 that researchers examined:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Only 4 percent received tPA, a drug that can reduce disability if given intravenously within three to four hours after the first stroke symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>Only 0.5 percent had endovascular therapy to reopen clogged arteries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These treatments are most likely available at designated stroke centers, where a team of providers are trained to quickly diagnose and treat strokes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a patient suspects they are having a stroke, they need to call 9-1-1 immediately and get to the nearest stroke center as soon as possible, which might mean bypassing another hospital that isn\u2019t set up to deliver the necessary therapy,\u201d said Opeolu Adeoye, M.D., M.S., the study\u2019s lead author and associate professor of emergency medicine and neurosurgery at the University of Cincinnati.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe strongly suggest that patients go to the hospital by ambulance, that they or whoever is with them ask to go to a stroke center and ask for tPA.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>The study found that within an hour\u2019s driving time:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Eighty-one percent had access to a hospital capable of administering tPA.<\/li>\n<li>Sixty-six percent had access to a primary stroke center.<\/li>\n<li>Fifty-six percent had access to a hospital capable of performing endovascular therapy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Within an hour by air:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Ninety-seven percent could reach a tPA-capable hospital.<\/li>\n<li>Ninety-one percent could reach a stroke center.<\/li>\n<li>Eighty-five percent could reach a hospital capable of performing endovascular therapy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2011, 60 percent of U.S. hospitals didn\u2019t administer tPA.
