{"id":7829,"date":"2013-10-17T05:00:09","date_gmt":"2013-10-17T10:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=7829"},"modified":"2013-10-16T22:53:48","modified_gmt":"2013-10-17T03:53:48","slug":"american-heart-association-says-healthcare-providers-should-aggressively-treat-unhealthy-lifestyles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2013\/10\/17\/american-heart-association-says-healthcare-providers-should-aggressively-treat-unhealthy-lifestyles\/","title":{"rendered":"American Heart Association says Healthcare providers should aggressively treat unhealthy lifestyles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-56563\" title=\"American Heart Association\" alt=\"American Heart Association\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/American-Heart-Association-new-logo-480x230.jpg\" width=\"230\" height=\"110\" \/><strong>Dallas, TX<\/strong> &#8211; Healthcare providers should treat unhealthy behaviors as aggressively as they treat high blood pressure, cholesterol and other heart disease risk factors, according to an American Heart Association science advisory published in Circulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re talking about a paradigm shift from only treating biomarkers \u2014 physical indicators of a person\u2019s risk for heart disease \u2014 to helping people change unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, unhealthy body weight, poor diet quality and lack of physical activity,\u201d said Bonnie Spring, Ph.D., lead author of the statement and a professor of preventive medicine and psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University in Chicago.<!--more-->\u201cWe already treat physical risk factors that can be measured through a blood sample or a blood pressure reading in a doctor\u2019s office, yet people put their health at risk through their behaviors. We can\u2019t measure the results of these behaviors in their bodies yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the statement\u2019s recommendations, healthcare providers should create \u201cinter-professional practices\u201d to connect patients with behavior change specialists such as dietitians or psychologists and implement the five A\u2019s when caring for patients:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assess a patient\u2019s risk behaviors for heart disease.<\/li>\n<li>Advise change, such as weight loss or exercise.<\/li>\n<li>Agree on an action plan.<\/li>\n<li>Assist with treatment.<\/li>\n<li>Arrange for follow-up care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For inter-professional practices to work, reimbursement policies must be revised, Spring said.<\/p>\n<p>Under an effective healthcare system, professionals can work with patients and draw on community and technology resources to provide intensive behavior interventions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a problem that can be solved alone by the patient or the doctor who is strapped for time,\u201d Spring said. \u201cWe need to break out of our silos and get ahead of the curve in prevention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said to achieve the American Heart Association\u2019s 2020 impact goals &#8211;to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent &#8212; we must make preventing cardiovascular diseases a priority.<\/p>\n<p>Judith K.
