{"id":7764,"date":"2013-09-26T06:00:09","date_gmt":"2013-09-26T11:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=7764"},"modified":"2013-09-25T16:44:43","modified_gmt":"2013-09-25T21:44:43","slug":"tennessee-apple-orchards-get-reprieve-thanks-to-recent-turn-in-the-weather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2013\/09\/26\/tennessee-apple-orchards-get-reprieve-thanks-to-recent-turn-in-the-weather\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee Apple Orchards Get \u201cReprieve\u201d Thanks to Recent Turn in the Weather"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-33044\" title=\"The Tennessee Department of Agriculture\" alt=\"The Tennessee Department of Agriculture\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/tnag.jpg\" width=\"140\" height=\"137\" \/><strong>Nashville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; \u201cWe\u2019ve had a reprieve,\u201d says Dr. David Lockwood, fruit specialist and professor of plant science at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite this year\u2019s challenges, the state\u2019s apple orchards are on target now to produce an average sized crop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee usually boasts a statewide apple yield between 7.5 and 9 million pounds, and the fruit crop specialist says he\u2019s guessing this year\u2019s commercial crop will fall within that range.<!--more-->\u201cHigh night time temperatures and persistent rain produce adverse effects in an apple\u2019s sugars and color, but now that night time temperatures have dropped and the weather\u2019s been dry, the crop is just getting better every day,\u201d says Lockwood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t have a crop last year to speak of because of the heat, so that actually worked in our favor for this year,\u201d says Lockwood, \u201ccausing the trees to produce an extra heavy fruit set. The trees did lose apples from the summer\u2019s rainy weather, but they needed to for their optimal number of apples to reach their potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apple orchards dot the state, and many farmers invite the public to pick their own apples or purchase apples straight from the farm. Apple growers often make their own canned and baked goods from the apples they produce and sell them at the orchard along with a variety of items from other local farms and artisans.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee apples are available now at local orchards and farmers markets across the state through the end of October.
