{"id":7469,"date":"2013-07-25T05:00:10","date_gmt":"2013-07-25T10:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=7469"},"modified":"2013-07-25T00:22:27","modified_gmt":"2013-07-25T05:22:27","slug":"american-heart-association-says-women-want-doctors-help-in-facing-fears-about-sex-after-heart-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2013\/07\/25\/american-heart-association-says-women-want-doctors-help-in-facing-fears-about-sex-after-heart-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"American Heart Association says Women want Doctors\u2019 help in facing fears about Sex after Heart Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><strong>Despite fears of another heart attack or dying, many started having sex within a month after their heart attack.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-56563\" title=\"American Heart Association\" alt=\"American Heart Association\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/American-Heart-Association-new-logo-480x230.jpg\" width=\"230\" height=\"110\" \/><strong>Dallas, TX<\/strong> &#8211; Women think it would be easier to overcome their fears of sex after having a heart attack if their doctors gave them more information, according to new research in the <em>Journal of the American Heart Association.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost women don\u2019t have discussions with their doctors about resuming sex after a heart attack even though many experience fear or other sexual problems,\u201d said Emily M. Abramsohn, M.P.H., the study\u2019s lead author and a researcher at the University of Chicago. \u201cWe wanted to get a better understanding of women\u2019s sexual recovery and how it could be improved.\u201d<!--more-->Researchers surveyed 17 women in depth about their sex lives before and after their heart attacks. The women were selected from the TRIUMPH trial (Translational Research Investigating Underlying Disparities in Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients\u2019 Health Status), a large, multi-state study of health and sexual outcomes after heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>The women, average 60 years old, were married or in long-term relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that after their heart attacks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most women and many of their partners were afraid to have sex again. They wondered when it was safe to resume sex and how much exertion their hearts could handle.<\/li>\n<li>Despite this fear, most women resumed having sex, many within four weeks.<\/li>\n<li>Most women wanted to have sex to be close to their partner again and get back to a \u201cnormal\u201d life.<\/li>\n<li>Of the few women who talked with their doctors about resuming sex, most initiated the discussion and were not happy with the quality of information they got.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cardiologists could ease concerns about sex after a heart attack if they talked openly with their patients about what to expect, Abramsohn said. The discussion should start while the woman is still in the hospital and continue throughout her recovery with other members of her healthcare team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important for you and your partner to know you\u2019re not alone in your confusion and fear about returning to sex after a heart attack,\u201d Abramsohn said. \u201cIf your doctor isn\u2019t giving you information to help you feel more comfortable about it, it\u2019s important for you to ask them for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Co-authors are: Carole Decker, R.N., Ph.D.; Brian Garavalia, Ph.D.; Linda Garavalia, Ph.D.; Kensey Gosch, M.S.; Harlan M.
