More Stops.<\/i> campaign to crack down on drivers who are speeding, drunk, distracted, or not wearing a seat belt.<\/p>\n<p>Too many lives have been lost on Tennessee\u2019s roadways as a result of basic traffic safety law violations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_123047\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/checkpoint.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123047\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-123047 \" title=\"Tennessee Governor\u2019s Highway Safety Office and Local Law Enforcement team up for for More Cops, More Stops. (Photo by CPD-Jim Knoll)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->In 2011, more than 700 passenger vehicle occupants died in Tennessee traffic crashes. Twenty-seven percent of the fatalities involved a drunk driver, and 23 percent were speeding-related crashes.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-seven percent of those who died were <b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NOT<\/span><\/b> wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are putting more officers on the road to make clear there will be no tolerance for those who ignore basic safety laws on our highways,\u201d said Richard Holt, Governor\u2019s Highway Safety Office Law Enforcement Administrator. \u201cDrivers need to know the risk is simply not worth it. You will be stopped, ticketed or arrested if we catch you driving while drunk or distracted, not wearing a seat belt or speeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nighttime is especially deadly because it is the time when more people fail to do the single most effective thing to save their life in a crash\u2014 wear a seat belt.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/More-Cops.-More-Stops.gif\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-116096\" title=\"More Cops. More Stops\" alt=\"More Cops. More Stops\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/More-Cops.-More-Stops.gif\" width=\"225\" height=\"145\" \/><\/a>In the U.S. in 2011, 62 percent of passenger vehicle occupants who were killed in nighttime (6:00pm to 5:59am) traffic crashes were <b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NOT<\/span><\/b> wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, compared to 43 percent of unbelted people who were killed in daytime crashes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHighway safety laws are in place for very good reasons, and ignoring or breaking them all too often leads to deadly consequences,\u201d said Kendell Poole, Director of the Governor\u2019s Highway Safety Office. \u201cOur high visibility enforcement during the <i>More Cops. More Stops. <\/i> campaign will hopefully help remind people to never drive drunk, always buckle up, to slow down, and to always pay attention to the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee law enforcement has teamed with the U.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to test the effectiveness of a combined highway safety law enforcement campaign, <i>More Cops. More Stops, <\/i>which focuses enforcement on multiple traffic safety laws.<i> <\/i><\/p>\n<p>For more information on the <i>More Cops.
