{"id":18023,"date":"2021-09-27T20:00:46","date_gmt":"2021-09-28T01:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=18023"},"modified":"2021-09-27T18:28:57","modified_gmt":"2021-09-27T23:28:57","slug":"tennessee-department-of-education-starts-literacy-awareness-campaign-starting-with-sounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2021\/09\/27\/tennessee-department-of-education-starts-literacy-awareness-campaign-starting-with-sounds\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee Department of Education starts Literacy Awareness Campaign: Starting with Sounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-335392\" title=\"Tennessee Department of Education\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Tennessee-Department-of-Education.jpg\" alt=\"Tennessee Department of Education\" width=\"250\" height=\"111\">Nashville, TN<\/strong>\u2014Today, Monday, September 27th, 2021. the Tennessee Department of Education, in collaboration with Tennessee PBS, has launched <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/starting-sounds\/\" >Starting with Sounds<\/a>, a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/education\/reading-360.html\" >Reading 360<\/a>&nbsp;statewide awareness campaign to help&nbsp;Tennessee&nbsp;parents and students understand the importance of reading in an engaging and fun way.<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with Tennessee PBS, the state\u2019s six PBS stations- WCTE, WETP, WKNO, WKOP, WLJT, WNPT, WTCI- covering east to west and north to south, the department created Starting with Sounds to highlight the importance of early literacy and how families and students can practice reading by watching and listening to national and local musicians, athletes, and champions of student success read their favorite books and sing songs to help build these critical skills.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Reading-360.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18024\" title=\"Reading 360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Reading-360-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Reading 360\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Reading-360-480x320.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Reading-360-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Reading-360-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Reading-360-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Reading-360.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrong reading skills early in life&nbsp;and&nbsp;especially&nbsp;the ability to read&nbsp;proficiently&nbsp;by&nbsp;third grade&nbsp;are&nbsp;important&nbsp;predictors&nbsp;of student success,\u201d&nbsp;said Commissioner Penny Schwinn.&nbsp;\u201cThanks to our&nbsp;friends&nbsp;at Tennessee\u2019s six&nbsp;PBS&nbsp;stations,&nbsp;and the generosity of celebrities&nbsp;who&nbsp;share our&nbsp;love&nbsp;of&nbsp;learning and reading&#8211;&nbsp;the department\u2019s&nbsp;Starting with Sounds&nbsp;programming will broadcast statewide to help children engage in reading and&nbsp;develop strong phonics skills\u2014learning&nbsp;how to hear and make sounds, how to associate sounds with letters, and how to combine sounds into words.&nbsp;Tennessee continues to&nbsp;prioritize&nbsp;education for our&nbsp;students&nbsp;and we are thrilled&nbsp;to&nbsp;provide more fun resources to help our little ones&nbsp;learn how to read.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A list of the participating musicians, athletes, notable Tennesseans, and national champions of youth achievement with links to their recorded videos is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/jason-crabb-starting-with-sounds-tennessee-pbs-vqqtzp\/\" ><strong>Jason Crabb:<\/strong><\/a><em>Grammy award-winning singer and musician reads children&#8217;s book &#8220;Most Days&#8221; and sing &#8220;No More Hard Times Blues&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><em>More to come!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Starting November 1st, Starting with Sounds will air on Tennessee PBS during the department\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/education\/pbsteaching.html\" >regularly scheduled<\/a> time block from 9:00am-11:00am CT. Additional Starting with Sounds videos will be added soon, including videos featuring celebrities like country music singer Tenille Townes and country music singer and songwriter Niko Moon. Local and national musicians, athletes, and other champions for student success are invited and encouraged to participate. It is essential that we begin there and build the strongest of foundations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor\u2019s Early Literacy Foundation (GELF) is proud to support the Starting with Sounds initiative to raise awareness of the importance of reading and our mission to strengthen early literacy statewide,\u201d&nbsp;said James Pond, president of GELF.&nbsp;\u201cReading goes beyond the pages of a book, and Tennessee Literacy Month is the perfect time for us to come together as Tennesseans to support our youngest learners. It\u2019s more than books. It\u2019s the future of Tennessee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starting with Sounds is a component of&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/education\/reading-360.html\" >Reading 360<\/a>, a comprehensive statewide literacy initiative to provide optional grants and resources to help more Tennessee students develop strong phonics-based reading skills by supporting districts, teachers, and families. Components of the Reading 360 initiative are funded with federal COVID-19 relief and stimulus funding.
