{"id":17096,"date":"2020-09-25T20:20:07","date_gmt":"2020-09-26T01:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=17096"},"modified":"2020-09-25T13:23:33","modified_gmt":"2020-09-25T18:23:33","slug":"tennessee-releases-data-showing-significant-learning-loss-among-k-12-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2020\/09\/25\/tennessee-releases-data-showing-significant-learning-loss-among-k-12-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee Releases Data Showing Significant Learning Loss Among K-12 Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-335392\" title=\"Tennessee Department of Education\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Tennessee-Department-of-Education.jpg\" alt=\"Tennessee Department of Education\" width=\"250\" height=\"111\">Nashville, TN <\/strong>&#8211; Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and the Tennessee Department of Education has released estimated data regarding learning loss for Tennessee students resulting from COVID-19 Coronavirus school closures through the summer months.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary data projects an estimated 50% decrease in proficiency rates in 3rd grade reading and a projected 65% decrease in proficiency in math.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_315479\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/School-Education.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-315479\" class=\"wp-image-315479 size-medium\" title=\"Projected Losses Tied to Prolonged School Closures and Time Away From Classroom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/School-Education-480x313.jpg\" alt=\"Projected Losses Tied to Prolonged School Closures and Time Away From Classroom\" width=\"480\" height=\"313\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-315479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Projected Losses Tied to Prolonged School Closures and Time Away From Classroom<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis data highlights the immense challenges that the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic has created for our students and educators,\u201d said Governor Lee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vast majority of students learn best in-person with their teacher, and we\u2019ll continue to help provide a safe environment for Tennessee students to get their educational journeys back on track,\u201d Governor Lee state.<\/p>\n<p>While many students traditionally experience learning loss over the summer, projections show that learning loss from March school closures through the summer is expected to be 2.5 times that of a normal summer rate.&nbsp;Projections were developed in partnership with national researchers using historical, Tennessee-specific data to provide additional learning loss estimates based on the extended school closures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that increased time away from school has negative implications for students, which is compounded during extended building closures,\u201d said Tennessee Commissioner of Education Penny Schwinn. \u201cThe department is focused on ensuring we provide essential services and resources to mitigate learning loss and keep students on a path to success this new school year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The learning loss impacts early grades greater than later grades, placing these students further behind in the learning trajectory as they progress through school. Students with lower proficiency rates are also disproportionately impacted by learning loss, further exacerbating existing achievement gaps.<\/p>\n<p>Research from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on the economics of education&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/hanushek.stanford.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/Hanushek%2BWoessmann%202020%20OECD%20Education%20Working%20Paper%20No.%20225.pdf\" >shows<\/a>&nbsp;that each additional year of schooling increases life income by an average of 7.5-10%.
