Classes are delivered in virtual (live scheduled classes through interactive video conferencing), online (anytime over the internet), and hybrid (combination of virtual, online and in person) formats, and in person when necessary for labs, clinicals and other strongly hands-on programs, with social distancing requirements in place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_498440\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Students-arrive-at-Northeast-State-Community-College-for-their-first-day-of-classes.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-498440\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-498440\" title=\"Students arrive at Northeast State Community College for their first day of classes.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Students-arrive-at-Northeast-State-Community-College-for-their-first-day-of-classes-480x288.jpg\" alt=\"Students arrive at Northeast State Community College for their first day of classes.\" width=\"480\" height=\"288\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-498440\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students arrive at Northeast State Community College for their first day of classes.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Masks and wellness checks are required each day students are on campus. The colleges have adopted pledges in which members of the campus community commit to take precautions every day to keep the entire college family safe &#8212; by wearing masks or shields, practicing social distancing, completing wellness screenings, staying home if they feel sick, and self-reporting a COVID-19 positive test.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur priority across our system has been the health and safety of our students as they pursue their dreams of college and career success, as well as our faculty and staff as they teach, advise, counsel and support them,\u201d said Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor Flora W. Tydings. \u201cI\u2019m confident that our campus families will rise to the occasion, as previous generations have done when facing difficult challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the insidious nature of the virus, clusters of cases will develop, but I strongly believe we have protocols in place to contain them. I join our college presidents in thanking the professionals at the Department of Health, TEMA, THEC and the Governor\u2019s Unified Command Group for helping us prepare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[470center]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Students, parents and the public can view numbers of cases by college, updated weekly, on the College System\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tbr.edu\/general\/novel-coronavirus-covid-19-information\" >COVID-19 Dashboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The colleges are making their&nbsp;campuses feel as normal and active as possible while being safe.&nbsp;Most will have their Welcome Week activities, following safety guidelines. Northeast students are competing in a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/northeastnation.wpcomstaging.com\/2020\/08\/18\/win-a-gift-card-in-the-face-mask-face-off-contest\/\" >Face Mask Face Off<\/a> for a $100.00 gift card, posting selfies in their masks in three categories &#8212; most creative, best school spirit and best academic-major theme.<\/p>\n<p>Chattanooga State\u2019s Humanities Department will present&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chattanoogastate.edu\/news-center\/internal-press-release\/fall-good-book\" >two major events<\/a> virtually next month:&nbsp; YA-hoo Fest, a Young Adult book festival September 14th-17th, and best-selling author Daniel Wallace will be featured in a weeklong celebration of his novel <em>Big Fish<\/em> September 21st-27th. Other arts and cultural events are planned across the system.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the challenges, it\u2019s important for students to continue their education. A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/drivingforward.tnscore.org\/\" >new report<\/a> by SCORE, in partnership with the University of Tennessee\u2019s Boyd Center for Business &amp; Economic Research, underscores that the unemployment gap between degree-earners and those without post high school credentials widened during the last two economic recessions and had not closed when the current downturn started.<\/p>\n<p>And as students and parents weigh their choices, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ccrc.tc.columbia.edu\/easyblog\/supplemental-enrollment-effects.html\" >new research<\/a> by Columbia University\u2019s Community College Research Center underscores the benefits of taking community college courses.<\/p>\n<p>Our colleges are maintaining their full range of academic, career and financial aid counseling and success coaching. Mental health and other resources are available. Tennessee Promise and Tennessee Reconnect provide tuition-free education for many students. Dual enrollment programs for high school students across the state continue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[470center]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe start of a new academic year and the return of our students gladden our hearts and spirits, and this year is no different despite the challenges. Masks aren\u2019t hiding the smiles of our students.
