{"id":16386,"date":"2020-06-12T20:37:20","date_gmt":"2020-06-13T01:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=16386"},"modified":"2020-06-12T17:05:16","modified_gmt":"2020-06-12T22:05:16","slug":"combating-elder-abuse-remains-priority-during-the-covid-19-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2020\/06\/12\/combating-elder-abuse-remains-priority-during-the-covid-19-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Combating Elder Abuse Remains Priority During the COVID-19 Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-334883 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Tennessee Department of Human Services\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Tennessee-Department-of-Human-Services-200x73.jpg\" alt=\"Tennessee Department of Human Services\" width=\"200\" height=\"73\">Nashville, TN <\/strong>&#8211; The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) is taking a number of important precautions this year as the state recognizes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_335464\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Elderly-Couple.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-335464\" class=\"wp-image-335464 size-medium\" title=\"Tennessee taking special steps to protect older adults while investigating cases of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Elderly-Couple-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Tennessee taking special steps to protect older adults while investigating cases of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-335464\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tennessee taking special steps to protect older adults while investigating cases of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic has created new dangers for older Tennesseans who are considered more at risk for severe health complications from the disease.<\/p>\n<p>To help protect the elderly, the TDHS Adult Protective Services (APS) program has implemented several changes while conducting investigations into allegations of abuse, neglect (including self- neglect), and financial exploitation of vulnerable adults.<\/p>\n<h3>This Includes<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Conducting home visits from outside the home when possible and talking to clients through the door or window.<\/li>\n<li>Using video apps to be able to safely see and communicate with clients in nursing homes.<\/li>\n<li>Utilizing two dry erase boards in one case so that a deaf client could communicate with staff without having to pass a notebook back and forth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cTennessee\u2019s seniors need our support now more than ever when facing abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation.\u201d said TDHS Commissioner Danielle W. Barnes. \u201cOur Adult Protective Services program has come up with innovative ways to provide that assistance and collaborate with our partner organizations to help protect vulnerable adults and build a thriving Tennessee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization established WEAAD in 2006 to raise awareness about the problem. In recognition, the State Capitol cupola will be lit in the official WEAD color purple on June 12th and the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge will be lit purple on June 13th.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, APS led the creation of a Coordinated Community Response (CCR) with 20 other government and non-profit agencies that play a role in responding to elder abuse. The goal was&nbsp; to improve communications, streamline investigations, and reduce the number of abusive unlicensed facilities.
