The email instructs them to download a malicious attachment and proceed immediately to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Scam-Alert.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-301705\" title=\"Scam Alert\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Scam-Alert-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"Scam Alert\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This particular social engineering scheme appears to come from a legitimate hospital, which is why it&#8217;s so alarming and could trick even a cautious end user.<\/p>\n<p>The victim is instructed to fill out a pre-filled Excel form, which is actually a macro-laden Office document that serves as a trojan downloader and is currently only detected by a handful of anti-virus applications.<\/p>\n<p>This piece of malware has a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=2763541-1&amp;h=3990933048&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.joesandbox.com%2Fanalysis%2F218575%2F0%2Fhtml&amp;a=number+of+advanced+functions\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">number of advanced functions<\/a>&nbsp;that allow it to evade detection by security applications, worm its way deep into an infested system, and serve as a platform for a variety of criminal activities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a new type of malware that we&#8217;re seeing, as it was reported for the first time just a few days ago,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Eric Howes<\/span>, principal lab researcher, KnowBe4. &#8220;For the bad guys, this is a target-rich environment that prays on end users&#8217; fears and heightened emotions during this pandemic.
