Heating equipment is the leading cause of home fire deaths nationally and the second leading known cause in Tennessee.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2020 Winter Fire Safety Commercial (60 Second TV Spot)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ReFPR-46Kkc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Tennessee State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office recently released <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ReFPR-46Kkc\" >new television and radio commercials<\/a> to raise awareness about the importance of fire safety during Tennessee\u2019s coldest months.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Consumers who need working smoke alarms are urged to contact their local fire department and ask if they participate in the SFMO\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/commerce\/fire\/prevention-education-and-outreach\/get-alarmed-tn.html\" >\u201cGet Alarmed, Tennessee!\u201d<\/a> free smoke alarm program.<\/p>\n<p>[320left]Since the \u201cGet Alarmed, Tennessee!\u201d program began in November 2012, volunteers from over 530 Tennessee fire departments and civic organizations have distributed over 217,000 working smoke alarms across the Volunteer State. &nbsp;Since the program\u2019s inception, 279 people have been alerted by working smoke alarms installed through \u201cGet Alarmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to stay warm during Tennessee\u2019s frigid winter months, but it\u2019s equally as important to practice good fire-safe behavior, too,\u201d said TDCI Assistant Commissioner Gary Farley. \u201cBefore winter arrives, take the time to ensure that you and your family know two ways out of every room in the event of a home fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>In addition to using working smoke alarms, Tennesseans are advised to remember:&nbsp;<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep flammable items like blankets or furniture at least three feet away from space heaters and wood stoves.<\/li>\n<li>Practice a home fire escape plan with your family. Everyone should know two ways out of each room.<\/li>\n<li>Never smoke in a home where medical oxygen is present. The increased presence of oxygen in the air makes fire burn hotter and faster.<\/li>\n<li>Always turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.<\/li>\n<li>Never use your oven to heat your home.<\/li>\n<li>Have heating equipment and chimneys inspected every year.<\/li>\n<li>Burn only dry, seasoned wood in fireplaces and woodstoves. Never burn garbage or use flammable liquids to start a fire.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure any fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying out. Ashes should be cool before disposing of them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.<\/li>\n<li>Install wood burning stoves following manufacturer\u2019s instructions or have a professional do the installation. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.<\/li>\n<li>If you smell gas coming from your gas heater, do not light the appliance.
