(American Heart Association)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"Default\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u201cThe holidays can present nutrition challenges and additional stressors, but simple changes and investments in your own health can make an impact on your well-being and help you enjoy the season even more,\u201d said Jo Ann Carson, PhD, RD, retired professor of clinical nutrition in Dallas and past volunteer chair of the nutrition committee of the American Heart Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u201cStart small by making one more healthy choice today and build on it tomorrow,\u201d Carson states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u201cOne healthy decision, like choosing baked over fried food for lunch, may not seem like much on its own, but success leads to more success and over time those little things add up to more health,\u201d Carson said. Focus on small, consistent steps.<u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">A recent survey conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.heart.org\/news\/survey-more-than-half-of-u-s-employees-who-typically-eat-lunch-during-work-hours-struggle-to-make-it-healthy\" title=\"https:\/\/newsroom.heart.org\/news\/survey-more-than-half-of-u-s-employees-who-typically-eat-lunch-during-work-hours-struggle-to-make-it-healthy\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aramark and the American Heart Association<\/a> showed more than three out of four (77%) employed U.S. adults say they\u2019re more likely to make healthier decisions at other times of the day if they eat healthy at lunch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">Bridget Wojciak, RDN, LD, senior nutrition coordinator at Kroger, a national supporter of Healthy for Good, also warns against one common mistake: putting healthy habits on hold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">\u201cDon\u2019t let the holidays scare you,\u201d Wojciak said. \u201cIt\u2019s ok to have some of your holiday favorites, just don\u2019t lose sight of the nutrition basics like consuming adequate water throughout the day, combining protein and fiber at meals to help stay full, and incorporating fruits and veggies at both snacks and meals.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"Default\">The American Heart Association\u2019s Healthy for Good Eat Smart Initiative offers five tips for nourishing yourself this holiday season:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"Default\"><strong>G<\/strong><b>et creative with swaps: <\/b>Cooking at home is a great way to take control of your diet and tweak favorite seasonal dishes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/sodium\/how-to-reduce-sodium\" title=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/sodium\/how-to-reduce-sodium\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reduce sodium<\/a> by replacing salt with herbs and spices, adding more fruits and vegetables to dishes and using lower-sodium canned and frozen products. Combine lower-sodium foods with regular versions to help your taste adapt. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><b>Snack smart<\/b>: To avoid overindulging at holiday gatherings, prep with nutrient-rich, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-lifestyle\/mental-health-and-wellbeing\/food-and-mood\" title=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-lifestyle\/mental-health-and-wellbeing\/food-and-mood\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Good Mood Foods<\/a> that don\u2019t sacrifice taste. Plus, it\u2019s easier to resist that candy bar in the checkout line if you aren\u2019t in a staring contest with it.<\/li>\n<li><b>Practice gratitude: &nbsp;<\/b>It can help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-lifestyle\/mental-health-and-wellbeing\/thankfulness-how-gratitude-can-help-your-health\" title=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-lifestyle\/mental-health-and-wellbeing\/thankfulness-how-gratitude-can-help-your-health\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lower blood pressure, improve your immune system<\/a> and spur you to eat better and exercise more. Write down five things you\u2019re grateful for and share them with your family and friends.
