{"id":14467,"date":"2019-05-10T16:00:49","date_gmt":"2019-05-10T21:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=14467"},"modified":"2019-05-09T22:46:57","modified_gmt":"2019-05-10T03:46:57","slug":"tdci-warns-consumers-about-genetic-testing-scams-aimed-at-seniors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2019\/05\/10\/tdci-warns-consumers-about-genetic-testing-scams-aimed-at-seniors\/","title":{"rendered":"TDCI Warns Consumers about Genetic Testing Scams Aimed at Seniors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-321814\" title=\"Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance - TDCI\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Tennessee-Department-of-Commerce-and-Insurance.jpg\" alt=\"Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance - TDCI\" width=\"250\" height=\"88\">Nashville, TN <\/strong>&#8211; The Tennessee Department of Commerce &amp; Insurance (TDCI) is warning consumers about Genetic Testing Scams aimed at Seniors to collect their personal information.<\/p>\n<p>That is way TDCI is joining other state and national regulators to warn consumers about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/info-2019\/dna-testing-scam.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> of people claiming to represent genetic testing firms who are visiting senior living communities, assisted living facilities and senior centers to swab seniors\u2019 cheeks purportedly to collect genetic material in order to screen for cancer or other life-threatening diseases.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Scam-Alert.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-301705\" title=\"Scam Alert\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Scam-Alert-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"Scam Alert\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Instead, these people are reportedly acquiring consumers\u2019 sensitive personal information under the guise of DNA testing and should be avoided.<\/p>\n<p>The scams\u2019 victims are sometimes under the impression that the cost of testing would be covered by Medicare. If a non-cancer patient is brought in for genetic testing under the pretense that it would be covered by Medicare, this may be a scam.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/medicare-coverage-database\/details\/nca-proposed-decision-memo.aspx?NCAId=290&amp;bc=AAAAAAAAACAA&amp;\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forth guidelines<\/a> as to when Medicare will allow and pay for these services. CMS has determined that Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) as a diagnostic laboratory test, when performed in an approved and certified laboratory and when ordered by a treating physician, is allowed when all CMS requirements have been met.<\/p>\n<p>CMS officials urge Medicare recipients to report concerns about suspicious activity to its toll-free number, 800.MEDICARE (800.633.4227).<\/p>\n<p>If you or a loved one is approached by someone claiming to offer genetic testing, remember:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never give your personal information (like your Medicare or Social Security information) to someone you do not know.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t sign any papers unless you ask questions first and talk about it with your family.<\/li>\n<li>Be skeptical.
