{"id":14434,"date":"2019-04-17T23:00:42","date_gmt":"2019-04-18T04:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=14434"},"modified":"2019-04-17T22:03:14","modified_gmt":"2019-04-18T03:03:14","slug":"tennessees-overall-fire-death-rate-follows-national-downward-trend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2019\/04\/17\/tennessees-overall-fire-death-rate-follows-national-downward-trend\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee\u2019s Overall Fire Death Rate Follows National Downward Trend"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Tennessee State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office (SFMO)<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-67254\" title=\"Tennessee State Fire Marshal\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Tennessee-State-Fire-Marshal-200x184.jpg\" alt=\"Tennessee State Fire Marshal\" width=\"200\" height=\"184\">Nashville, TN <\/strong>&#8211; Tennessee\u2019s overall fire death rate continues to decline following the national downward trend in the reduction of fire deaths according to statistics compiled in the recently completed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/content\/dam\/tn\/commerce\/documents\/fire_prevention\/posts\/AnnualFirePreventionReport2018.pdf\" >annual report<\/a> for the Tennessee State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office (SFMO).<\/p>\n<p>The report, which includes details of Tennessee\u2019s overall declining fire death rate along with statewide fire prevention and education efforts, compiles data provided by fire departments from across the Volunteer State along with information, statistics, and advancements made by the SFMO\u2019s eight sections: Education &amp; Outreach; Fire Investigations; Codes Enforcement; Residential, Electrical and Marina Inspections; Manufactured Housing and Modular Buildings; Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy; Firefighting Commission; and Administrative Services.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/SFMO-Annual-Fire-Prevention-Report-2018.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-449808\" title=\"Tennessee State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office's Annual Fire Prevention Report for 2018\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/SFMO-Annual-Fire-Prevention-Report-2018-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Tennessee State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office's Annual Fire Prevention Report for 2018\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Tennessee, which has historically ranked among the highest states with civilian fire deaths, is now ranked No. 11 in the nation for fire deaths by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) with 14.6 deaths per million from 2011 \u2013 2015. This compares to its ranking as No. 6 in the nation from 2006 &#8211; 2010.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThe State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office has a singular mission: to make Tennessee a safer place where families can live, work, and play,\u201d said Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Julie Mix McPeak. \u201cThe annual report serves as a statistical snapshot of fire education, prevention and code enforcement efforts in Tennessee. We thank our partners for their help in making Tennessee safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Other highlights include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>While Tennessee fire departments reported 100 fire deaths in Tennessee in 2018 (an 18% increase over 85 deaths in 2017) the overall trend for fire deaths in Tennessee is declining. The rate of unintentional fire deaths in 2018 was 14.8 deaths per million in Tennessee.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Over 21,350 smoke alarms were installed in Tennessee homes through the \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/commerce\/fire\/prevention-education-and-outreach\/get-alarmed-tn.html\" >Get Alarmed, Tennessee<\/a>\u201d program. Additionally, 53 Tennesseans escaped residential structure fires in 2018 thanks to alarms installed through \u201cGet Alarmed, Tennessee!\u201d The program, which started in 2012, received renewed federal grant funding in 2018 continuing the life-saving initiative through at least 2019.<\/li>\n<li>In October 2018, the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy (TFACA) celebrated the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/s\/aHskFHYDQk\" >ceremonial groundbreaking<\/a> of a new 19,000 square foot conference center. This space will accommodate large and specialty classes, incident management courses, conferences, and graduations. Last year, a total of 14,484 students were enrolled in TFACA and participated in 1,063 classes.<\/li>\n<li>The Electrical, Residential, and Marina section issues permits and performs inspections to enforce state electrical, building, and energy conservation codes. Following the passage of the Noah Dean and Nate Act in 2015, marina inspections were added to this division\u2019s operations.
