While candles are fragrant home d\u00e9cor, the Tennessee State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office (SFMO) reminds consumers that candles must be used properly to avoid the potential loss of life, injury, and property damage from an accidental fire.<\/p>\n<p>Though candles might make a house feel more like a home, they can also cause tragedy if they aren\u2019t used correctly.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_444246\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Candles.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-444246\" class=\"wp-image-444246 size-medium\" title=\"71 Candle Fires in 2018 lead to 2 Deaths and Over $1.8M in Property Damage according to the Tennessee State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Candles-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"71 Candle Fires in 2018 lead to 2 Deaths and Over $1.8M in Property Damage according to the Tennessee State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office.\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-444246\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">71 Candle Fires in 2018 lead to 2 Deaths and Over $1.8M in Property Damage according to the Tennessee State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;In 2018, Tennessee fire departments responded to 71 residential structure fires that were started by candles.<\/p>\n<p>These fires caused two civilian fatalities, four civilian injuries, two firefighter injuries and $1,836,316 in property damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandles can certainly provide ambiance, but they can also quickly cause a tragedy,\u201d said Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Julie Mix McPeak. \u201cThe good news is that candle fires can be easily prevention if a few basic precautions are taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 23 home candle fires are reported each day. More than one-third (37%) of home candle fires started in bedrooms. Over half (60%) of home candle fires happened because a combustible material, like furniture or fabric, was too close to the candle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The SFMO offers the following tips to help keep Tennesseans safe from candle fires:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell, and feel like real candles.<\/li>\n<li>When using candles, place them in sturdy, safe candleholders that will not burn or tip over.<\/li>\n<li>Protect candle flames with glass chimneys\/containers.<\/li>\n<li>Keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish candles when you leave a room or the home or go to bed.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid using candles in bedrooms and sleeping areas.<\/li>\n<li>Keep children and pets away from burning candles. Never leave a child unattended in a room with a candle.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Never use a candle where medical oxygen is being used. The two can combine to create a large, unexpected fire. Medical oxygen can cause materials to ignite more easily and burn at a faster rate than normal.
