\"AmericanDallas, TX<\/strong> – Community coffee shops and automated teller machines, or ATMs, might be ideal locations for public access to automated external defibrillators<\/a> (AEDs), according to new research in the American Heart Association\u2019s journal Circulation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a computerized medical device that can check a person\u2019s heart rhythm and recognize a rhythm that requires a shock and advise the rescuer when a shock is needed.<\/p>\n

\"CARDIAC<\/a>

CARDIAC ARREST occurs when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly. Cardiac arrest is an “ELECTRICAL” problem. A HEART ATTACK occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked. A heart attack is a \u201cCIRCULATION\u201d problem. A blocked artery prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart. If the blocked artery is not reopened quickly, the part of the heart normally nourished by that artery begins to die. (American Heart Association)<\/p><\/div>\n

The AED uses voice prompts, lights and text messages to tell the rescuer the steps to take.<\/p>\n

Placement of AEDs in communities is an ongoing effort to provide access to these lifesaving devices to bystanders, so they can help people who suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To determine where best to place AEDs in the community, researchers studied different businesses and municipal locations in Toronto, Canada. They ranked the businesses and other locations according to how many cardiac arrests occurred within 100 meters of the locations, and when they were open.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe found that coffee shops and ATMs ranked highly across several related metrics, and that those rankings were stable over the years,\u201d said Timothy C.Y. Chan, Ph.D., study author and Canada Research Chair in Novel Optimization and Analytics in Health, University of Toronto in Canada.<\/p>\n
