Help protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property by complying with the safety instructions that are provided with home medical oxygen supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Fire-Safety.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-335914\" title=\"Fire Safety\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Fire-Safety-480x270.jpg\" alt=\"Fire Safety\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\"><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From 2011-2016 there were 34 fire fatalities in which medical oxygen was reported as present in the residence.<\/p>\n<p>Eight fire fatalities involving medical oxygen occurred in Tennessee during 2016, the second-highest number recorded in the state\u2019s history (2014 was first with 9 fatalities).<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoking is the leading heat source resulting in medical oxygen-related fires, injuries and deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The SFMO encourages Tennesseans to remember the following important precautions regarding home medical oxygen use:<\/p>\n<h3>Safety Tips<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There is no safe way to smoke in the home when oxygen is in use. <u>A patient on oxygen should not smoke<\/u>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Candles, matches, wood stoves and even sparking toys can be ignition sources and should not be used in the home.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Keep oxygen cylinders at least five feet from heat sources, open flames or electrical devices.<\/li>\n<li>Body oil, hand lotion and items containing oil and grease can easily ignite. Keep oil and grease away from where oxygen is in use.<\/li>\n<li>Never use aerosol sprays \u2013 especially those whose cans indicate flammable contents \u2013 near the oxygen.<\/li>\n<li>Post \u201cNo Smoking\u201d and \u201cNo Open Flames\u201d signs in and outside the home to remind people not to smoke.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure smoke alarms are working by testing them monthly and replacing any smoke that is 10 years old or older.<\/li>\n<li>Plan a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room and a designated outside meeting place.
