{"id":11989,"date":"2016-11-08T08:00:08","date_gmt":"2016-11-08T14:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=11989"},"modified":"2016-11-08T01:19:06","modified_gmt":"2016-11-08T07:19:06","slug":"fatal-horse-viruses-detected-in-west-tennessee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2016\/11\/08\/fatal-horse-viruses-detected-in-west-tennessee\/","title":{"rendered":"Fatal Horse Viruses Detected in West Tennessee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-33044\" title=\"The Tennessee Department of Agriculture\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/tnag.jpg\" alt=\"The Tennessee Department of Agriculture\" width=\"140\" height=\"137\"><strong>Nashville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; With unseasonably warm weather persisting well into the fall, mosquito-borne illnesses remain a serious health threat for horses in Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>A horse in Dyer County and a horse in Gibson County both recently tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).<\/p>\n<p>A horse in Chester County has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).<\/p>\n<p>Sick horses cannot directly infect people with WNV or EEE.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/mosquito-2.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-34418\" title=\"Mosquito\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/mosquito-2-480x380.jpg\" alt=\"Mosquito\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\"><\/a><!--more-->Mosquitoes are responsible for transmission and the resulting viruses can be fatal.<\/p>\n<p>Although there is no vaccine for people, the WNV and EEE vaccines for equines are particularly effective to protect horses against infection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe typically think of mosquitoes as a summer-time pest,\u201d state veterinarian Dr. Charles Hatcher said. \u201cHowever, the record heat this fall has allowed mosquitoes to endure. It\u2019s critical that livestock are current on annual vaccinations for year-round protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to vaccinating livestock, eliminate standing water sources where mosquitoes prefer to breed.
